## The Undergraduate Major in American Studies

**For our undergraduate major, students combine courses in American Studies with courses from relevant disciplines in literature, history, the arts, and social sciences.**

The undergraduate major encourages innovative, non-traditional scholarship; it also requires a substantial foundation of knowledge of the United States from local, national, and global perspectives. Each student chooses one of six areas of concentration: national formations; the international United States; material cultures and built environments; politics and American communities; and visual, audio, literary, and performance cultures.

Students interested in the major are encouraged to consult with the [American Studies Director of Undergraduate Studies](https://calendly.com/nikki-strong-yale/20min).  At this meeting, the DUS will acquaint prospective majors with the program of study worksheet and go over course transcripts to begin charting progress in the major.
