# Professorship Bioprocess EngineeringProf. Dr. Michael Zavrel

The professorship for Bioprocess Engineering at the TUM Campus Straubing was established in June 2022 and is headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Zavrel.

The focus of the professorship is the development of sustainable bioprocesses. The bioprocesses are based on biogenic raw materials which do not compete with the food chain such as agricultural residues and waste streams. The products are bio-based and should be biodegradable.

The professorship comprises fermentation processes, downstream processing and bioprocess design. Specific research focus is laid on:

- Model-based process design
- Tolerant fermentation processes
- Innovative downstream processing
- Upscaling of bioprocesses
