From HMF to a bio-based polyamide building block through enzyme catalysis

From HMF to a bio-based polyamide building block through enzyme catalysis:\ We are pleased to highlight the work of Eleonora Fornoni, whose PhD research at the Chair of Chemistry of Biogenic Resourceswas recently published in Green Chemistry (Royal Society of Chemistry) together with Ammar Al-Shameri and Volker Sieber.\ Eleonoras study demonstrates a biocatalytic conversion of HMF into 5-(aminomethyl)-2-furancarboxylic acid (AMFCA) – a promising bio-based building block for polyamides. The work involved the selection, engineering, and characterization of enzymes, the design and optimization of an enzymatic cascade, and the evaluation of the process’s environmental impact in terms of Global Warming Potential. \ This research contributes to advancing sustainable synthesis pathways and highlights the potential of enzyme catalysisin green chemical production. Congratulations to Eleonora and all collaborators on this achievement!
