Career

Sibylle Günter studied physics at Rostock University, Germany, and completed her PhD there in 1990. After extended research stays in the USA, she completed her postdoctoral teaching qualification with a thesis on the “Optical properties of dense plasmas” in 1996. She then joined the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) as a member of scientific staff, working in the area of the theory of fusion plasmas. She has, in particular, made seminal contributions to the understanding of the stability of magnetically confined plasmas. In 2000, Sibylle Günter was made a Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society and Director at IPP. She has been Scientific Director of IPP and chair of the directorate since 2011. Sibylle Günter is an adjunct professor at the University of Rostock.
