New Features for Canvas

Canvas releases new features all the time. We’ve tested them all and curated the list below for JHU faculty. Make sure you’re getting the most out of Canvas and reach out with any questions!

  1. Scheduling Feedback

Have you been frustrated that students see feedback immediately after you post it, before you can even finish grading an assignment? Along with setting a Manual Posting Policy for an assignment, you can now schedule when your assignment feedback is shared with students, and create separate release dates for grades and feedback!

  1. Enhanced Rubrics

Enhanced Rubrics are now easier to edit and build, offer more granular controls (High to Low OR Low to High), can be imported/exported in CSV format, and have three different viewing options in SpeedGrader. You can also ask students to use the assignment rubric to self-assess themselves when they submit an assignment.

  1. Differentiation Tags

Differentiation tags allow instructors or TAs to create custom sets of students within a Canvas course, making it easy to tailor content and communication to certain groups. They can be used for assignments, modules, due dates, gradebook displays, inbox messages and much more. Tags are invisible to students. This is one of the most powerful and requested new features in Canvas.

  1. Assign To and To-Do Dates

The Assign To feature can be used to customize access to assignments, discussions, quizzes, or entire modules by individual student, course sections, or differentiation tags. You can also assign To-Do dates on individual Canvas Pages which causes them to appear as tasks on a student to-do lists, which they see on dashboards and the mobile app.

  1. New Quizzes

Graded New Quizzes now offer three downloadable reports to analyze quiz results. You can also create Graded and Ungraded Surveys as quiz types and choose whether responses will be anonymous. The ability to export survey results as a CSV file should be available in the next few months.
