2026 Workshop Overview

The Center for Teaching Excellence and Innovation is pleased to offer Introduction to Educational Research (IER): a multi-half-day workshop for faculty, staff, graduate students, and postdocs at Johns Hopkins and beyond. The workshop introduces education research with a focus on higher education in a hands-on and engaging way. Learn and apply qualitative (e.g., observations, interviews, etc.) and quantitative (e.g., surveys, etc.) methods in a supportive environment with other curious and passionate peers. Values promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice in the classroom will be fully integrated into the workshop. As an added bonus, participants can bring their ideas for an optional 30-minute one-on-one consultation meeting with CTEI’s Senior Education Research Consultant, Dr. Melo-Jean Yap.

This is a great hands-on opportunity for new and experienced faculty, staff, postdocs, and graduate students interested in learning about education research in an engaging way. The workshop is open to all Johns Hopkins faculty, staff, postdocs, and graduate students from any discipline. External university colleagues (from beyond Hopkins) are also welcome to attend.

Please note: This workshop is not for academic credit. Participants will earn a Certificate of Completion.

• June 9th, Tuesday:

  • 11:15 am – 12:15 pm = Guest Speaker: Dr. Sergey Kushnarev (WSE, Applied Math & Statistics)

• June 10th, Wednesday:
  • 10:00 am – 12:15 pm = Quant: Surveys + Analysis

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Describe research approaches in education.
• Summarize best practices in quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research.
• Reflect on one’s identities and background, and how they inform one’s researcher positionality.
• Discuss ethical and inclusive strategies for engaging with diverse stakeholders.
• Perform hands-on activities for designing, collecting, and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data.
• Develop a working purpose statement for research study of interest.

Daily Learning Goals

• Day 1 – Overview & Qualitative Research: June 8th, Monday
• Explain the value and potential of education research in elevating praxis and advancing scholarship.
• Describe various research approaches and the interconnected framework between research paradigms, design, and methods.
• Reflect on one’s positionality that informs your role as an education researcher.
• Discuss ethical and inclusive strategies for engaging with diverse stakeholders.
• Define qualitative research and its common types of research design.
• Summarize best practices for using qualitative methods such as interviewing and conducting field observations.
• Day 2 – Qualitative Analysis & Quantitative Research: June 9th, Tuesday
• Perform hands-on activities to practice interviewing and field observations in real-time.
• Manage and integrate qualitative data, including preparing analytic memos, for data triangulation.
• Analyze data using qualitative coding analysis and creating vignettes.
• Summarize quantitative research methods and design in education.
• Compare and contrast descriptive and inferential types of questions in quantitative research.
• Describe best practices for survey research design.
• Day 3: Quantitative Analysis & Wrap-up: June 10th, Wednesday
• Critique survey questions based on sound practices for designing appropriate questions.
• Analyze quantitative data using open-source coding software such as R or Python.
• Develop a working purpose statement for research study of interest.
• Describe mixed methods research in education.
• Develop a working purpose statement for research study of interest.
• Identify library resources for exploring education research literature.

Fees

• Workshop fee: $800
• FOR JHU faculty/staff
• Full-time, benefits-eligible JHU employees may submit for 100% tuition remission. There is no cap to this benefit, and it does not deduct from the annual $ 5,250 allotment for credit courses. You are eligible for tuition remission once you have completed 120 days of full-time employment as long as you are JHU faculty or staff and continue in a full-time position.
