Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the tour like? What will I see?
On a docent-led tour of Evergreen, you will see many rooms of the Gilded Age mansion, including the 30,000-volume John Work Garrett Library, plus objects ranging from Tiffany glass and Asian ceramics to paintings by artists such as Picasso, Modigliani, Raoul Dufy, Zelda Fitzgerald, Diego Rivera, and David Driskell. The tour takes approximately 75 minutes to complete. Visitors with time constraints can request a shorter version of the tour by speaking to visitor services staff and/or your docent before the tour starts. - Is the museum accessible to people with limited mobility?
Due to the historical nature of the building, the guided tour is not accessible to those with limited mobility, including those using a wheelchair or a walker. Canes can be accommodated but please be advised that the regular tour requires climbing stairs and being able to stand for approximately 75 minutes. Wheelchairs and walkers can be accommodated in The North Wing (Gallery, Far East Room, Bakst Theatre, and Gift Shop). With the exception of service animals, pets are not permitted in the museum or on the grounds. To request special accommodations, call 410-516-0341 or email museums@jhu.edu. - Can I explore the grounds?
Portions of the grounds can be explored during regular operating hours (Tuesday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.) via self-guided tours. All visitors must check-in at the Gift Shop first to receive a visitor’s sticker, a map, and instructions before touring the grounds. With the exception of service animals, pers are not permitted in the museum or on the grounds. - Was slavery practiced at Evergreen?
Evergreen was built in 1858 for the family of Stephen Broadbent, a wealthy entrepreneur and lottery dealer. Current research does not indicate the presence of enslaved laborers at Evergreen; however, we acknowledge that the construction and operation of antebellum estates in Baltimore—like Evergreen—were made possible by racist systems that exploited the labor of both enslaved and free Black people. We remain committed to exploring the full history of the house and invite our community to engage with us in learning and reflecting on all aspects of its past. If you have relevant information to share, or any questions or concerns, please email museums@jhu.edu. - Do you offer group tours?
Yes, we welcome groups to the museum. Group tours start at nine (9) people and receive a discounted rate. For an additional fee, we also offer boxed lunches, served in the Far East Room. To learn more about booking a group tour, please email museums@jhu.edu. - Can I host an event at Evergreen?
Yes, Evergreen is available to rent for private events such as weddings, parties, meetings, and other gatherings. Proceeds from event rentals support the museum’s operations and initiatives. Your patronage is appreciated. For more information, contact our Private Events Office. - What facilities are available on-site for visitors?
Lockers, bathrooms, and a water fountain are available onsite. Neither food concessions nor an ATM is available. - Can I take photographs at Evergreen?
Photography/videography is permitted in designated areas at Evergreen under the following circumstances:
- You and your party have checked in at the Gift Shop and received a sticker designating you as an approved visitor to the property.
- The content you create will be used only for non-commercial purposes.

- I would like to access the museum and/or its collections for research purposes. Who do I contact?
We are happy to consider scholarly inquiries. Many objects in Evergreen’s collection are viewable on this searchable database. If you have more specific questions, please contact Curator of Collections, Michelle Fitzgerald, at mfitzg19@jhu.edu with a summary of your research objective and timeline. If your research request involves a volume in the John Work Garrett Library, please contact Head of Materials Management, Amy Kimball, at akimball@jhu.edu. - How do I become more involved with Evergreen Museum & Library?
