Free Admission February

Admission to Homewood Museum is free during the month of February so that everyone has an opportunity to experience the powerful stories of all the people who have lived, labored, and learned in the building during its 225-year history.

Includes entry to the exhibit If Homewood’s Walls Could Talk: A History of an American House. Ticketed events and programs are not included.

Tuesday-Sunday, 11am – 4pm

JHU Museums are now cashless. The museums charge a 3% service fee on all tour tickets to ensure that all proceeds can go directly to museum operations.

Homewood Museum Bookshop

The Bookshop carries Homewood souvenirs, books highlighing stories of Black resistance and resilience, and products from independent Black-owned businesses.

Proceeds from the Bookshop support museum operations and initiatives. Your patronage is appreciated.

JHU faculty and students are encouraged to visit the museum and study its collections. To make arrangements to visit or access an object, please submit a request using our online form.

Getting There

Bike

We welcome visitors by foot and bicycle. Bike racks are located on the Johns Hopkins University campus. U-Bolt bike locks are recommended.

Bus

Baltimore City bus routes service the museum’s Charles Street location, including the Route 51 Bus (“Towson-Downtown”) and Route 95 Bus (“Downtown to Roland Park”). Routes and stops change frequently, so please consult the MTA’s website here.

Collegetown Shuttle

For students, faculty, and staff of the Johns Hopkins University, Notre Dame of Maryland University, and Towson University, the free Baltimore Collegetown Shuttle operates during the spring and fall semesters. The stop for Johns Hopkins University is at 3400 North Charles Street. Homewood is at the top right of the circular driveway at the campus’ main entrance.

Parking

Parking is extremely limited around Homewood campus due to construction, snow, and other factors outside our control. For JHU parking lot options, please click here and scroll down to the Visitor Parking section. Ride share options are encouraged.

Frequently Asked Questions

On either a docent-led or a self-guided tour of Homewood, you will learn about the history of early 19th-century Baltimore and the people who resided at Homewood during that time, both free and enslaved. You also will see 12 rooms of the Federal-era mansion, plus many objects in its collection, including furniture, ceramics, paintings, and silver. The docent-led tour takes approximately 1 hour to complete. The self-guided tour takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.

Please note: The tour discusses mature themes such as slavery, violence, domestic abuse, and sexual assault, and may not be appropriate for younger visitors. - Is the museum accessible to people with limited mobility?

Due to the historical nature of the building, Homewood Museum is not accessible to those with impaired mobility, including those using walkers or wheelchairs. Canes can be accommodated but please be advised that the regular tour requires climbing stairs and being able to stand for the duration of the tour. With the exception of service animals, pets are not permitted in the museum or on the grounds. To request special accommodations, call 410-516-5589 or email museums@jhu.edu. - Do you offer group tours?

Yes, we welcome groups to the museum. Group tours start at nine (9) people and receive a discounted rate. To learn more about booking a group tour, please email museums@jhu.edu. - Can I explore the grounds?

Homewood sits on the campus of the Johns Hopkins University, which spans approximately 130 acres in the Charles Village neighborhood. The campus is open to the public and accessible to people with limited mobility. A self-guided tour of Homewood and its associated buildings and sites is available upon request in the Gift Shop. - Can I take photographs at Homewood?

Yes, photography for non-commercial use is allowed inside and outside at Homewood. Please consult our Photography Policy for further information. - What facilities are available on-site for visitors?

Bathrooms are available onsite, but located down a full flight of stairs. Food concessions are available in the Charles Village neighborhood just a short walk from the museum. - I would like to access the museum and/or its collections for research purposes. Who do I contact?
