Application and timelines
What happens if I miss the scholarship submission deadline?
If you have submitted your course application and/or scholarship application after the deadline, this is okay.
You will automatically be considered in the next round as long as you are either:
- currently enrolled in your degree, or
- submitted your request to defer your application for admission to a relevant research period by the deadline for the next round.
What documents do I need to provide in my scholarship application?
Before you complete this form, please have completed the following and have the below information and documents ready:
New students:
- Completed your course application to a research degree (HDR) at the University of Sydney
- Provide your Student Identification Number (SID) which you will receive when you complete your course application or your IPU number (12 character application ID (IPUxxxxxxxxx) which is generated when you complete your registration as a new user)
Current students(already commenced your research degree at the University of Sydney):
- Provide your official transcripts and qualifications with your name and marks.
- Provide the grading system information related to your qualifications. The grading system information is generally on the last or reverse pages of the transcript.
- Provide an official translation of your transcript if your transcript is in a language other than English.
Please combine all transcripts and qualification documents, including grading system information and official translation (if applicable) into one PDF file for submission.
Research Experience (RE) - Optional for new and current students
Research experience is not a mandatory requirement for your scholarship application. However, if you do have research experience, as outlined in Section 5 of the HDR Scholarship Selection Process document, please submit this via the RE form. You must submit it in the required format for it to be considered.\ \ Research experience may be recognized based on demonstrated research performance, including scholarly publications, relevant professional activities, or direct research experience. Acceptable publications must be original, peer-reviewed, and published (or accepted) by reputable sources listed in Scopus, ISI, or ERA databases; self-published or non-standard publications will not be accepted.**
Can I apply for a scholarship after I commence my research?
Yes. Once your scholarship application is submitted your application will be assessed in line with the Application and Award Timeline.
I'm currently an international student but I've applied for Australian permanent residency. Can I apply for a scholarship?
You can apply for a scholarship. If you are awarded, your scholarship will be adjusted to match your residency status.
I previously held a scholarship for a now completed master's candidature and am now starting a new PhD candidature. Can I apply for a scholarship?
Yes, you are eligible to apply.
I recently submitted my scholarship application, but I’ve since had a journal article accepted for publication. Can I add this to my application?
Yes, you will need to re-submit your scholarship application. However, please note if you submit your application after the deadline your scholarship application will not be assessed until the next scholarship round as per the Application and Award Timeline.
I am still waiting on the final result of my current studies. Can I still apply for a scholarship?
You can still submit your application for admission to a higher degree by research (HDR).
You may also submit your scholarship application, however, we may not be able to provide you with an outcome of your application until you have provided your final qualification/transcripts and grading scales.
Once your final qualification/transcripts and grading scales are available please re-submit your scholarship application. It will be assessed in line with the Application and Award Timeline.
Can I apply for a scholarship without applying for admission?
No, scholarship applications are assessed in conjunction with your application for admission application for a higher degree by research (HDR) to the University.
What type of degree can a scholarship be awarded for?
Applications for a scholarship are only for students wanting to undertake a postgraduate research degree, ie. a master's by research or a research doctorate (PhD).
I received second class honours from another Australian university, but if I’d gotten the same mark at the University of Sydney I would have received first class honours. Can my result be considered as first class honours?
No, your result remains second class honours.
I received a second class honours result but there were mitigating circumstances. Can I apply for special consideration of my RTP application?
No, your result remains second class honours.
Can I apply for a scholarship based on financial need?
The scholarships are awarded on academic merit and research potential only.
I want to study part-time, will I still be considered for these scholarships?
Yes, you will be considered for these scholarships if you would like to study part-time. If you are awarded a scholarship you will need to refer to your scholarship terms and conditions on whether you are eligible to hold the scholarship on a part-time basis.
Are RTP and the equivalent university scholarships available for the MPhil as well as the PhD?
You are eligible to apply for the scholarships if you are enrolled in any higher degree by research at the University.
Outcomes
When will I find out if my scholarship application has been successful?
Refer to the application and award timeline for domestic and international students.
What is the likelihood of my scholarship application being successful?
The Scholarships Office cannot pre-assess your RTP application. Only a submitted application can be assessed against published eligibility requirements and ranked against applicants for the intake(s) under consideration. The outcome of application will only be released following the committee meeting.
I’m going overseas just before the scholarship results will be released. Can I get my result a little bit earlier?
No, the Scholarships Office does not release results early.
My application for a scholarship was unsuccessful. Can I get some feedback?
The University does not provide specific ranking outcomes apart from notifications to successful and unsuccessful applicants. Applicants are encouraged to refer to the Applicant Information Pack and HDR scholarship selection process for questions related to scholarship award process.
How can I improve my scholarship application?
We strongly recommend reviewing the following guides if you plan to reapply for a scholarship.
If I am not successful in gaining a scholarship, what other scholarship options are available?
There are many scholarship options available beyond the RTP and equivalent University scholarships. Browse postgraduate research scholarships for and international students.
How do I accept my RTP or equivalent scholarship?
If you are successful in receiving a scholarship, you will be sent the scholarship offer by email. You will need to follow the instructions in the email on how to accept your scholarship.
When will I get paid my RTP or equivalent university scholarship?
Your scholarship payments will be made on a fortnightly basis into your nominated Australian bank account from the start date of your scholarship.
I have received a waitlist, when will I know the final outcome?
If you're on the waitlist, your application will be reconsidered as more scholarships become available. Final decisions are typically released in the next outcome round, depending on your status (e.g., domestic or international). Please see the Application and Award Timeline on .
I have a conditional admission offer/to be finalized scholarship outcome, what next steps do I need to take?
You will need to provide required documentation(s) specified in related correspondences. Without the required document, your application cannot progress further.
Deferrals and transfers
Can I defer my scholarship offer?
You can defer your scholarship to a later research period, as long as it is within the same calendar year in which it was originally offered.
I hold a scholarship at another university, but I want to transfer my candidature to the University of Sydney. Can I directly transfer my scholarship?
No, the scholarship funds were awarded to your original university and do not transfer with you. You will need to follow the University of Sydney scholarship application process.
Relocation allowance
Am I eligible to claim the relocation allowance?
You may be eligible if:
- You were residing outside NSW, Australia at the time of your scholarship offer; and
- You are at the beginning of your postgraduate research degree.
- You are residing in Australia and intend to return to their home country after thesis submission.
Students who had already commenced their research degree in Australia or who became an Australian permanent resident prior to commencement/completion are not eligible.
Which scholarships include a relocation allowance?
As of the publication date, the following scholarships include this allowance:
- Research Training Program (RTP) International Scholarship
- University of Sydney International Stipend Scholarship (USYDIS)
You may also refer to the terms and conditions of your scholarship to confirm whether it includes a relocation reimbursement allowance.
What can I claim under this allowance?
You may claim:
- Economy airfare (most direct route between your home country and Sydney)
- Relocation services: moving, shipping, excess baggage, temporary storage, and equivalent services
- All claims must be supported by official receipts or invoices.
What expenses are not claimable?
Examples of non-claimable items include:
- Costs not directly related to the scholarship recipient
- Incidental travel expenses such as accommodation or meals
- Quotations or pro-forma invoices (only final receipts are accepted)
How much can I claim?
- Up to AUD $1,485 per claim
- You can submit two claims total: one at the start of your degree, and one at the end
- Claims in foreign currency will be converted using historical exchange rates available to the public
What is the deadline for submitting a claim?
- You must submit your application within 6 months of:
- Your scholarship commencement date (for the first claim), or
- Your degree completion date (for the second claim)
- Late claims will not be accepted.
How do I apply for the relocation allowance?
- Complete the Application for Relocation Reimbursement form via the Service Now portal within the deadline
- Attach all relevant supporting documents (e.g. invoices, receipts)
