- an abnormally thickened part appearing as a knot or lump;
- the hard [basal](https://eflora.sydney.edu.au/glossary/basal "attached or grouped at the base") projection (often sharply pointed) at the base of a [floret](https://eflora.sydney.edu.au/glossary/floret "the flower of Asteraceae;") or [spikelet](https://eflora.sydney.edu.au/glossary/spikelet "a unit of the grass inflorescence usually consisting of two glumes with one of more florets;") of some grasses.
