## Frequently asked questions

### What are the differences between rules, policies, procedures, local provisions, and guidelines?

**Rules** are made by the University Senate. They take precedence over any other document in the Policy Register.

**Policies** state who does what and why. They set out principles, and roles and responsibilities, to help guide decision making.

**Procedures** set out when, where, and how we do things. They include specific roles, actions, and steps to give instructions and standardise our processes.

**Local provisions** set out principles and instructions that only apply to a particular faculty, school, or administrative unit.

**Guidelines** provide context, detail, andrecommendations for good practice. They are not mandatory.

### Who manages policy and compliance?

The Policy and Compliance Law (PCL) team within the Office of General Counsel manages the University’s policy and compliance frameworks.

Within the PCL team, the Policy Management Unit manages the Policy Register and oversees quality assurance for all our policies.
