Dr Cyril Laplane


Biography

Postdoctoral Research Associate, Quantum Control Laboratory

Cyril Laplane obtained a Master’s degree in Nanoscale Engineering from the University of Lyon in 2012. He then pursued a PhD in the Group of Applied Physics at the University of Geneva, where his research focused on developing solid-state quantum memories for light based on rare-earth ion-doped crystals, with applications in quantum communication. In late 2017, he moved to Sydney to join the Quantum Materials and Applications Laboratory at Macquarie University, developing new optofluidic techniques for sorting and manipulating nanoparticles. In 2020, Dr Laplane was awarded one of the inaugural Sydney Quantum Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships to establish an independent research program in levitated optomechanics, using optically active nanocrystals. His work explored applications ranging from next-generation inertial force sensing to probing the quantum–classical boundary.

He joined the University of Sydney’s Quantum Control Laboratory in 2024 as a Senior Research Fellow, where he works on ultra-low phase noise master clocks to enhance the performance of trapped-ion quantum processors. In parallel, he started a new research effort in the group on levitated optomechanics for high-precision force sensing and macroscopic quantum physics.
