# Carpel

a unit of the [gynoecium](https://eflora.sydney.edu.au/glossary/gynoecium "the carpels of one flower collectively.") in which one or more ovules are enclosed. It is usually divided into [stigma](https://eflora.sydney.edu.au/glossary/stigma "that part of the style adapted for the reception and germination of pollen grains."), [style](https://eflora.sydney.edu.au/glossary/style "that part of the pistil situated above the ovary and bearing the stigma."), and [ovary](https://eflora.sydney.edu.au/glossary/ovary "the basal portion of a carpel or group of fused carpels in which one or more ovules are enclosed, and which after fertilization develops into the fruit.").
