- Background
a. Established in 1973 by a bequest from George Harris. This Scholarship aims to recognise PhD candidates undertaking research in geology or geophysics for their achievements and contributions to the School of Geosciences at the University of Sydney.
- Eligibility
a. Candidates must be enrolled in a PhD within the School of Geoscience and be undertaking research in either geology or geophysics.
- Selection Criteria
a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:
I. academic merit, \ II. research activities & output, and\ III. contribution to teaching within the School.
b. The Scholarship will be awarded on the nomination of a selection committee consisting of the Head of School – Geosciences and the Dean of the Faculty of Science, or their nominees.
- Value
a. The Scholarship is valued at $1,250 and is paid as a lump sum payment upon award. If two top applicants are equally ranked, the Scholarship value may be shared.
b. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university.
c. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.
d. No other amount is payable.
- Ongoing eligibility
a. None apply.
- Termination\
a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:
I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,\ II. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance, \ III. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, or\ IV. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.
b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error. \ \ c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or withdraws from the relevant course, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
- Misconduct
a. Where during the Scholarship a student engages in misconduct, or other inappropriate conduct (either during the Scholarship or in connection with the student’s application and eligibility for the Scholarship), which in the opinion of the University warrants recovery of funds provided, the University may require the student to repay payments made in connection with the Scholarship. Examples of such conduct include and without limitation; academic dishonesty, research misconduct within the meaning of the Research Code of Conduct (for example, plagiarism in proposing, carrying out or reporting the results of research, or failure to declare or manage a serious conflict of interests), breach of the Code of Conduct for Students and misrepresentation in the application materials or other documentation associated with the Scholarship.
b. The University may require such repayment at any time during or after the Scholarship period. In addition, by accepting this Scholarship, the student consents to all aspects of any investigation into misconduct in connection with this Scholarship being disclosed by the University to the funding body and/or any relevant professional body.
