Collection Description
The [Sydney University Medical Society (SUMS)](https://usu.edu.au/clubs-societies/Our-Clubs-Societies/Course-Related/Medical-Society.aspx) is Australia's oldest medical student society, dating back to 1886. This collection of yearbooks, 1922–1980 was digitised and first made public by the [University of Sydney School of Medicine](https://www.sydney.edu.au/medicine-health/schools/sydney-medical-school.html) as part of [The University of Sydney School of Medicine Online Museum](https://www.sydney.edu.au/medicine/museum/mwmuseum/index.php/Sydney_Medical_School_Online_Museum_and_Archive).
Notable medical graduates in this collection include:
- [Dame Marie Bashir](https://digital.library.sydney.edu.au/nodes/view/11885?keywords=&lsk=efb5ff31fda94783b54602619dc08f27#idx321574) AD CVO, former Clinical Director of Mental Health Services for the Central Sydney Area Health Service, Governor of New South Wales and Chancellor of the University of Sydney.
- [Dr. John Yeo](https://digital.library.sydney.edu.au/nodes/view/11885?keywords=&lsk=efb5ff31fda94783b54602619dc08f27#idx321629), a leader in the prevention and rehabilitation of people with spinal injuries. The founder and director of the Spinal Research Foundation in 1976.
- [Dr. Graeme Clark](https://digital.library.sydney.edu.au/nodes/view/11887?keywords=&lsk=efb5ff31fda94783b54602619dc08f27#idx321875), a pioneer of the multiple-channel cochlear implant.
- [Dr. Janet MacCredie](https://digital.library.sydney.edu.au/nodes/view/11888?keywords=&lsk=efb5ff31fda94783b54602619dc08f27#idx322060) AM, devised the theory of Neural Crest Injury as being the pathogenesis of congenital malformations of the thalidomide type, and one of the instigators of NSW Breast Screen.

- [Dr. Victor Chang](https://digital.library.sydney.edu.au/nodes/view/11892#idx322671) AC, a pioneer of modern heart transplantation and humanitarian.
- [Dr. Susan Pond](https://digital.library.sydney.edu.au/nodes/view/11898#idx323720) AM, a world leader in physiological research into the functions and mechanisms of the liver, the first woman to be appointed to a Personal Professorial Chair in the Department of Medicine at the University of Queensland, and the first woman to receive the Wellcome Australia Medal.
- [Dame Valerie Beral](https://digital.library.sydney.edu.au/nodes/view/11898#idx323652)AC DBE FRS FRCOG FMedSci, epidemiologist, academic and a preeminent specialist in breast cancer epidemiology.
- [Dr. Gordian Ward Fulde AO](https://digital.library.sydney.edu.au/nodes/view/11901#idx324002), the founder of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, and former Director of the emergency department of St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney for 35 years, retiring in 2018.
