Collection Description

The collection contains the diary and sketchbook that Evelyn Nicholson kept during a voyage to Australia with husband Charles Archibald Nicholson, covering the period from June 14 to October 13, 1897. In the diary Nicholson gives a lively picture of life during the trip, including accounts of sickness, the food, the landscape, and the weather. The sketchbook contains watercolour paintings done by Evelyn Nicholson and Charles Nicholson. Charles Nicholson was the child of Sir Charles Nicholson, 1st Baronet, one of the founders of Sydney University.
