Who's eligible

You must:

• be enrolled in Anthropology in an Honours, Master of Arts (Research), Master of Philosophy, or PhD degree \
• be applying for funding to be used for the specified research project only. (i.e., overseas fieldwork or any other activity that is part of their research). Funds may not be used for preparation of a thesis for presentation.

Background

This scholarship was established in 1988 by Mrs Fancy Lawrence, wife of Emeritus Professor Peter Lawrence who was a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Sydney from 1971 to 1986.\ \ This scholarship supports students in Anthropology to undertake overseas fieldwork or any other activity related to their research.

Terms and conditions

1. Background

a. An opportunity is available for an outstanding Honours, Masters of Arts (Research), Master of Philosophy or PhD scholar in the area of Anthropology.

b. This Scholarship was established in 1988 by Mrs Fancy Lawrence, wife of Emeritus Professor Peter Lawrence who was a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Sydney from 1971 to 1986.

c. This scholarship supports students in Anthropology to undertake overseas fieldwork or any other activity related to their research.

1. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be currently enrolled to study in Anthropology at the University of Sydney in one of the following degrees:

I. Honours,\ II. Master of Arts (Research),\ III. Master of Philosophy, or\ IV. PhD.

b. Applicants must be applying for funding to be used for the specified research project only. (i.e., overseas fieldwork or any other activity that is part of their research). Funds may not be used for preparation of a thesis for presentation.

1. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit,\ II. curriculum vitae, and\ III. a personal statement which describes how the Scholarship will assist them in their studies.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee consisting of:

I. Chair of Anthropology (or their nominated delegate), and\ II. two continuing staff members in Anthropology.

1. Value

a. The exact value of the Scholarship will be determined each year by the Selection Committee based on the available spending allocation from the trust and outlined in the successful recipient’s Scholarship Offer Letter.

b. The Scholarship value will be paid as a one-off payment after receipt of the Scholarship Acceptance Form.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Head of School, School of Social and Political Sciences.

d. The scholarship cannot be transferred to another University school, faculty or university.

e. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

f. No other amount is payable.

1. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,\ II. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance, \ III. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, or\ IV. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

b. For Honours students, the Scholarship will also be terminated if the recipient accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, valued at $8,000 per annum or more for the same purpose as this Scholarship,

c. For Masters by Research or PhD students, the Scholarship will also be terminated:

I. upon submission of the thesis or at the end of the award,\ II. upon the recipient having completed the maximum candidature for their degree as per the University of Sydney (Higher Degree by Research) Rule 2011 Policy,\ III. if the recipient currently holds or receives and accepts an alternative primary stipend scholarship this Scholarship will be determined as a Supplementary scholarship. If the overall supplementary rate paid to the student is more than 75% of the primary amount this Scholarship will be terminated in favour of the alternative stipend scholarship where it is of higher value.

d. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error. \ \ e. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed. \ \
