Background

This scholarship was established in 2020 to assist postgraduate students studying English to develop their skills in poetry and/or academic writing about poetry.

This scholarship is funded by a bequest made by Stanley Sinclair in 1992.

Terms and conditions

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established in 2020 to provide assistance to postgraduate students studying English to develop their skills in poetry and/or academic writing about poetry.

b. This Scholarship is funded by a bequest made by Stanley Sinclair in 1992.

1. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be currently enrolled to study in a postgraduate degree in English and Writing within the School of Art, Communication and English (SACE), Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney.

b. Applicants must demonstrate their:

I. ability to compose poetry, and/or\ II. academic writing about poetry.

1. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit, \ II. recent work as part of current studies that is either:\ i. a portfolio of work of up to a maximum of 5 poems that demonstrates their ability to compose poetry, or \ ii. one essay that demonstrates their ability for academic writing about poetry, and\ III. a personal statement that demonstrates the student's commitment to developing their skills in poetry and/ or academic writing about poetry (250 words).

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee consisting of

I. the Chair of English and Writing or their nominated delegate, and\ II. at least one other academic from English and Writing.

1. Value

a. A recipient enrolled full-time will receive $5,000 per annum for up to one year.

b. A recipient enrolled part-time will receive $2,500 per annum for up to two years.

c. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date as follows:

I. each semester for coursework students, or\ II. Research Period 2 and Research Period 3 for research students.

d. The Scholarship may be deferred and/or suspended for up to 6 months with prior permission of the Chair of English and Writing.

e. The Scholarship is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university.

f. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

g. No other amount is payable.

1. Ongoing eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain:

I. a minimum Semester Average Mark (SAM) of 65 each semester if enrolled in a coursework degree, or\ II. satisfactory academic performance if enrolled in a research degree.

b. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment.

1. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,\ II. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance, \ III. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, or\ IV. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

b. For research students, the Scholarship will also be terminated:

I. upon submission of the thesis or at the end of the award,\ II. upon the recipient having completed the maximum candidature for their degree as per the University of Sydney (Higher Degree by Research) Rule 2011 Policy, or\ III. if the recipient ceases to meet the eligibility requirements specified for this Scholarship, (other than during a period in which the Scholarship has been suspended or during a period of approved leave).

c. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error. \ \ d. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed. \
