Collection Description
This collection contains images and text that document the early construction of roads, highways and bridges across Australia from the late 19th century through to the mid-20th century. \ \ The materials were created by Dr. J.J.C. Bradfield, most famously known for the design and construction of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. He also contributed to a great many engineering projects in Australia, including the Cataract and Burrinjuck dams, a transit network plan for suburban Sydney and the Story Bridge in Brisbane. \ \ John Job Crew Bradfield (1867-1943) attended the University of Sydney, graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering in 1889 and awarded the University Gold Medal. In 1924, Bradfield was awarded the first-ever Doctorate of Science in Engineering by the University of Sydney for his thesis 'The City and Suburban Electric Railways and the Sydney Harbour Bridge'.
