# Charles Herbert Currey Memorial Scholarship

An undergraduate scholarship

This scholarship aims to support students who have experienced disadvantage or hardship to participate in an exchange or short-term mobility program.

## Benefits

This scholarship is valued at $7,000 for a semester-long exchange and $3,500 for a short-term mobility program and is tenable for one semester.

## Who's eligible

You must:

- be either:\
  - currently enrolled to study in an undergraduate degree within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney, or
  - currently enrolled at an interstate university or international partner university
- be able to demonstrate financial hardship based on one or more of the below:
  - identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island person as defined in the University of Sydney’s [Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015](https://www.sydney.edu.au/policies/showdoc.aspx?recnum=PDOC2014/364&RendNum=0)
  - low socio-economic status\
  - carer responsibilities
  - long-term medical condition/disability (including ongoing effects of abuse)
  - sole-parent responsibilities
  - regional or remote disadvantage
  - refugee status
  - identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex or queer (LGBTIQ+), and/or
  - first in family.

Applicants from the University of Sydney must be:

- intending to apply or have applied for a University of Sydney Exchange program or short-term mobility program, and

- be intending to commence the approved exchange or short-term mobility program within the calendar year of the scholarship application closing date.

Applicants from an interstate or international partner university must be:

- intending to apply or have applied to undertake units of study within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney through cross-institutional study or an approved exchange agreement or study abroad program.

**1. Background**

a. This Scholarship has been established to allow students that are experiencing financial hardship to participate in a student exchange or study abroad program.

b. This Scholarship has been funded by a bequest made in 1973 by Mrs Linda Currey in memory of her husband, Charles Herbert Currey, MA LLD.

**2. Eligibility**

a. Applicants must be either:

I. currently enrolled to study in an undergraduate degree within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney, or

II. currently enrolled at an interstate university or international partner university.

b. Applicants from the University of Sydney must:\

I. be intending to apply or have applied for a University of Sydney Exchange program or short-term mobility program, and

II. be intending to commence the approved exchange or short-term mobility program within the calendar year of the scholarship application closing date.

c. Applicants from an interstate or international partner university must be intending to apply or have applied to undertake units of study within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney through cross-institutional study or an approved exchange agreement or study abroad program.

d. Applicants must demonstrate financial hardship based on one or more of the below:

I. identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island person as defined in the University of Sydney’s [Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015](http://sydney.edu.au/policies/showdoc.aspx?recnum=PDOC2014/364&RendNum=0),

II. low socio-economic status,

VII. refugee status,

VIII. identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex or queer (LGBTIQ+), and/or

IX. first in family.

**3. Selection Criteria**

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit,

II. evidence of enrolment at an interstate or international partner University (if applicable), and

III. a personal statement that demonstrates:

i. their financial hardship, and

ii. how the scholarship will allow them to participate in student exchange or study abroad program.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee consisting of the:

I. Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs or their nominated delegate, and

II. at least two academic staff from the Undergraduate Programs Committee.

**4. Value**

a. The Scholarship is valued at $7,000 for a semester long exchange and $3,500 for a short-term mobility program.

b. The Scholarship value will be paid as a one-off payment on receipt of the Scholarship Acceptance Form and:

I. University of Sydney recipient – evidence of being approved for a University of Sydney exchange program or short-term mobility program, or

II. Interstate or international partner university recipient – evidence of enrolment into units of study within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney through cross-institutional study or an approved exchange agreement or study abroad program.

c. Deferral and/or suspension of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

d. The scholarship is not transferable to school, faculty or university.

e. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

f. No other amount is payable.

**5. Termination**

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. does not go on the approved Exchange Program or short-term mobility program,

III. does not commence the approved exchange or short-term mobility program within the calendar year of the scholarship application closing date,

IV. does not go on the cross-institutional study or an approved exchange agreement or study abroad program,

V. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,

VI. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, or

VII. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
