Choosing an engineering minor or certificate is a great way to graduate with an extra set of credentials, or just explore an area of interest while earning your BASc. You can also take a minor through the Faculty of Arts & Science, where you’ll find thousands of course options — such as philosophy, anthropology or Italian.

Engineering Minors

While you’re earning your BASc, you can attain specialization in one of the following areas:

Advanced Manufacturing

The most intensive research and development sector in Canada is manufacturing. Courses in this minor cover an array of competencies, all of which can be broadly applied to areas like biomedical, automotive, aerospace and energy.

Artificial Intelligence Engineering

This new minor delves into topics such as fundamentals of AI, data mining, neural networks and deep learning allowing you to understand and utilize algorithms and data structures, critique the role of implications of AI in society and apply that in-depth knowledge to address engineering problems.

Bioengineering

The minor provides in-depth knowledge from molecular and cell scale engineering, manufacturing of biosystems and devices, to translation of technologies ranging from sustainable energy and renewable bioproducts to patient care.

Engineering Business

This minor represents a powerful collaboration between U of T Engineering and the University’s prestigious Rotman School of Management. The first of its kind in Canada, it provides an overview of the world of finance, economics, business management and marketing from an engineering perspective. This minor will give you a range of business-oriented opportunities when you graduate and can be a springboard to starting your own company.

Environmental Engineering

Through this program, you’ll delve into topics such as ecology and ecological impact, waste management, water and wastewater treatment, environmental microbiology, water resources engineering, hydrology, preventive engineering, life-cycle analysis, design for the environment, and the social and environmental impact of technology.

Global Leadership

This minor has a critical and multidisciplinary focus on leadership in a global context. This is combined with an emphasis on developing knowledge of global issues within an engineering framework and how engineers can influence and improve conditions around the world.

Music Performance

This unique program is designed for exceptional musicians who are interested in combining their artistic and technical pursuits. Through our partnership with the Faculty of Music, engineering students will have access to a performance-based program, including courses typically only offered to music students.

Nanoengineering

This minor allows students to explore topics in electronics, communications, sustainable and legacy energy, medical diagnostics and devices, micro-electrical-mechanical systems, and new materials for the automotive, aviation and manufacturing sectors. The minor provides students with an understanding of both the structure and the application of nanomaterials.

Robotics & Mechatronics

With this minor, you’ll explore technologies that turn robotic and mechatronic systems into viable consumer products. Coursework covers micro-electromechanical systems and nanotechnology, advanced techniques for signal processing and systems control, and new system-level principles underlying embedded systems. This minor builds on the strengths of our Institute for Robotics & Mechatronics.

Sustainable Energy

The need for greener, more sustainable energy resources is critical — as is the need for more engineering expertise in sustainability. This extremely popular minor focuses on the sustainable use of energy, energy demand management and public policy related to sustainability.

To obtain an engineering minor, you need to complete a specific number of credits from a set of designated courses. For example, if you’re interested in the Engineering Business minor, you would take courses in engineering economics, accounting and finance, competitive strategy and people management, plus two additional courses. When you graduate, your minor will appear on your transcripts.

Arts & Science Minors

You can also take a minor through the Faculty of Arts & Science, and select from thousands of course options — like sociology, languages, cinema studies, philosophy, history or music. Completing an optional Arts & Science minor is a great way to expand your knowledge.
