Early Career Teaching Award

The Early Career Teaching Award recognizes early career, full- or part-time faculty in the teaching or tenure stream who have made outstanding contributions and achievement in teaching such as through creation of innovative and effective learning activities/assignments, active involvement in curriculum development, commitment to professional development, demonstrating genuine enthusiasm for teaching, and active engagement and motivation of students. \ \ This award is peer nominated, with additional support from two peers or students. \ *Nominee must have an appointment of 4 years or less at Bloomberg Nursing and not previously received this award. \ *Doctoral students cannot support a nomination of their supervisor or supervisory committee members.

Distinction in Educational Leadership Award

The Distinction in Educational Leadership Award recognizes faculty who, over an academic year, demonstrated leadership in developing, implementing and/or coordinating curriculum, courses, projects and/or programs, outstanding accomplishments and collaboration. \ \ This award is peer nominated, with additional support from two peers. \ *Nominee must not have received this award in the past 3 years.

Formerly called Excellence in Educational Leadership (2021-2024):

Equity & Diversity Award

The Equity & Diversity Award recognizes faculty, preceptors, clinical instructors, or teaching assistants who, over an academic year, demonstrated exceptional sensitivity to equity, diversity, inclusivity and accessibility that enhanced student learning, student experience and/or curriculum design. \ \ This award is faculty or student nominated, with additional support from two faculty, staff or students. \ *Nominee must not have received this award in the past 3 years. \ *Doctoral students cannot nominate or support a nomination of their supervisor or supervisory committee members.

Betty Burcher Mentoring Award

The Betty Burcher Mentoring Award recognizes faculty who, over an academic year, exemplified the spirit and legacy of Betty Burcher in enhancing student or faculty development in teaching and learning beyond usual activities through mentoring. \ \ Betty spent most of her nursing career at Toronto Public Health, working to protect, promote and preserve the health of vulnerable populations, before she came to the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing as an educator. Betty had a strong commitment to social justice and equity, and these principles informed the ways she felt, thought, and acted in both her professional and personal life. She was an incredibly intelligent, caring, passionate and generous teacher and colleague. She always promoted and modelled a climate of care, respect, inclusion and collegiality. Nothing brought her more joy than to help students and colleagues reach their full potential and she did so by providing opportunities for scholarly and clinical collaboration as well as professional networking. She invited people β€œin” and brought individuals together in community to learn from one another and work towards a common goal. Betty mentored people in her life to be courageous, to think critically and creatively, to lead with compassion and optimism, to have humility, and to do the work with a healthy sense of humour, never forgetting to laugh with one another. \ \ This award is peer or student nominated, with additional support from two peers or students. \ *Nominee must not have received this award in the past 3 years. \ *Doctoral students cannot nominate or support a nomination of their supervisor or supervisor committee members.

Distinction in Online Teaching Award

The Distinction in Online Teaching Award recognizes faculty who, over an academic year, demonstrated distinction in teaching and using technology resulting in high student engagement, innovation, enthusiasm and critical thinking in online courses or online components of courses. \ \ This award is peer or student nominated, with additional support from two peers or students. \ *Nominee must not have received this award in the past 3 years. \ *Doctoral students cannot nominate or support a nomination of their supervisors or supervisor committee members.

Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award

The Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award recognizes Teaching Assistants who demonstrated exceptional contributions, going above and beyond in their role to significantly enhance the learning experience for students resulting in high student engagement, innovation, enthusiasm, and critical thinking. \ \ This award is course professor or student nominated, with additional support from two faculty and/or students. \ *Nominee must not have received this award in the past 3 years.

Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Award

The Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Award recognizes faculty who, over an academic year, demonstrated excellence in teaching as characterized by superlative communication skills, mastery of subject area, and the ability to stimulate enthusiasm and facilitate critical/analytic thinking in students. \ \ This award is student nominated. \ *Nominee must not have received this award in the past 3 years.

Distinction in Undergraduate Teaching Award

The Distinction in Undergraduate Teaching Award recipient recognizes excellence in teaching, over an academic year, as characterized by superlative communication skills, master of subject area, and the ability to stimulate enthusiasm and critical/analytical thinking in students.

The Undergraduate Entry-Year Excellence in Clinical Instructing Award recognizes clinical instructors who engaged in supervising undergraduate students during a clinical placement in the entry year, and demonstrated excellence in clinical teaching as characterized by outstanding professionalism and role modelling; exceptional approach to clinical learning that is supportive, respectful, creative, enthusiastic, evidence-based and student-centred; and effectiveness in fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

This award is faculty, staff or student nominated. \ *Nominee must not have received this award in the past 3 years.

Undergraduate Senior-Year Excellence in Clinical Instructing Award

The Undergraduate Senior-Year Excellence in Clinical Instructing Award recognizes clinical instructors who engaged in supervising undergraduate students during a placement in NUR460 or NUR461, and demonstrated excellence in clinical teaching as characterized by outstanding professionalism and role modelling; exceptional approach to clinical learning that is supportive, respectful, creative, enthusiastic, evidence-based and student-centred; and effectiveness in fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

This award is faculty, staff or student nominated. \ *Nominee must not have received this award in the past 3 years.

Excellence in Precepting: Undergraduate Award

The Excellence in Precepting: Undergraduate Award recognizes preceptors who engaged in supervising undergraduate students in NUR461 or NUR470, and demonstrated excellence in precepting as characterized by outstanding professionalism and role modelling; exceptional approach to clinical learning that is supportive, respectful, creative, enthusiastic, evidence-based and student-centred; and effectiveness in fostering critical thinking and problem solving skills.

This award is faculty, staff or student nominated. \ *Nominee must not have received this award in the past 3 years.

Excellence in Precepting: Graduate Award

The Excellence in Precepting: Graduate Award recognizes preceptors who engaged in supervising graduate students and demonstrated excellence in precepting as characterized by outstanding professionalism and role modelling; exceptional approach to practicum learning that is supportive, respectful, creative, enthusiastic, evidence-based and student-centred; and effectiveness in fostering critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Award for Teaching that Intellectually-Challenges Students *(Discontinued in 2025)

This award recognizes demonstrated teaching that intellectually challenges and stimulates students. This award is both peer- and student-nominated.
