Strengthen health education in the Eastern GTA

The Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health will train health-care professionals directly in the region.

The region of Scarborough and the Eastern GTA is vibrant and diverse—but it suffers from a critical shortage of health-care professionals. The area has some of Ontario’s lowest per-capita rates of physicians and specialists, limiting the population’s access to local health care and straining the system. To remedy this situation, the region needs a dedicated training hub for health-care professionals.

I’m excited to bring the Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s exemplary medical education program to Scarborough. By expanding existing programs, the Scarborough Academy of Medicine will increase the number of health professionals serving this community — ultimately strengthening the health and well-being of my fellow Scarborough residents for generations to come.”

Caroline Chan\ Academy Director\ Scarborough Academy of Medicine

With the oldest faculty of medicine in the Greater Toronto Area, the University of Toronto is uniquely equipped to meet this need. The new Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health will expand the strengths of the renowned Temerty Faculty of Medicine, Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing and Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy to train the next generation of health-care professionals in Scarborough and the Eastern GTA, in partnership with four leading local hospitals. Gifts from Myron and Berna Garron and Orlando Corporation will enable students to acquire clinical and research skills in a new, state-of-the-art facility currently under construction at U of T Scarborough, the Myron and Berna Garron Health Sciences Complex. The hub will also establish research and training clinics within the complex, as well as student scholarship initiatives.

This one-of-a-kind integrated training hub will strengthen the Eastern GTA’s health-care system and build a strong network of health-care professionals who reflect the community, including doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and physical therapists. By supporting the Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health, you can help improve access to high-quality health care for this dynamic and growing region’s nearly 1.3 million residents.
