From future career prospects and academic prestige to student success and becoming part of a community, there are many factors to consider when deciding which university to attend. This is truly an exciting time for your student, and your entire family.

We created this page to support you — as parents and guardians — as you support your student during the application process.

Introduction to U of T Engineering

We are the top-ranked engineering school in Canada and among the world’s best. Our diverse community includes approximately 5,628 undergraduates, 3,011 graduate students and 280 professors. The Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering is located on the St. George campus of the University of Toronto, in the heart of downtown Toronto.

Overview of theU of T Engineering Application Process

In general, there are four main aspects to applying for studies at U of T Engineering. Please note that deadlines and required documents, including Englishlanguage requirements, vary by applicant type; please visit the Apply section where detailed information and requirements are organized by applicant type. We also have a page dedicated to important deadlines for your reference.

  1. Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC): The OUAC facilitates applications for all universities in Ontario. Students are able to apply to multiple Ontario university programs through the OUAC. International students applying only to U of T and no other Ontario universities should use the U of T International Application instead.
  2. Engineering Applicant Portal: Upon submitting their application through the OUAC, your student will receive details from U of T Engineering on how to access the Engineering ApplicantPortal. This portal serves as a hub for all things concerning your student’s application to U of T Engineering — from documents we have received or are waiting to receive, to decisions made by our Admissions Committee. This is also where students can upload required documents as needed. Students are advised to log into the Portal regularly to see their current application status.
  3. Online Student Profile: Through the Engineering Applicant Portal, your student will need to access and complete the Online Student Profile. The Online Student Profile is a mandatory part of the U of T Engineering admissions process. It is your student’s opportunity to rank their engineering programs of interest, indicate their interest in our PEY Co-op Program, share their academic history and tell us about their activities outside of class. The Online Student Profile includes written and video components; full instructions and deadlines are sent directly to applicants.
  4. Scholarships & Financial Planning: Students applying from high school will automatically be considered for several U of T admissions scholarships. If your student would like to be considered for others, they should check the Scholarships section for requirements and deadlines. Those eligible for government-sponsored loans (e.g., Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) or the University of Toronto Advanced Planning for Students (UTAPS) program should review the Finances page.
  5. Residence: If your student is interested in on-campus residence, they must complete the University of Toronto’s common residence application called StarRez. Read more about the process and U of T’s residence guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are U of T’s engineering programs available at the Mississauga or Scarborough campuses?

The Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering’s programs are only available downtown on the St. George campus in downtown Toronto.

What grades will my student need to be competitive?

While each applicant’s academic performance is a critical factor in the U of T Engineering admissions process, we firmly believe in the importance of understanding each prospect’s full potential through their extracurricular activities and future aspirations. Applicants share this information with the Admissions Committee through the Online Student Profile, which includes short written responses and video submissions. These written and video components in combination with academic performance constitute our broad-based admissions process.

Last year, Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) applicants who were eligible for admission consideration presented admission averages within the following ranges. Note that meeting these minimum averages did not guarantee admission. Admission averages are calculated using the following prerequisite subjects: English (ENG4U); Advanced Functions (MHF4U); Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U); Chemistry (SCH4U); and Physics (SPH4U).

How do you receive my student’s marks? Do we have to send them to you?

If your student is completing all years of high school in Ontario, their school will electronically transmit all grades to us. If your student is studying outside of Ontario, we will require transcripts from all academic institutions attended from the start of high school to present, along with proof of English facility if applicable. Transcripts may be submitted via the Engineering Applicant Portal’s document upload feature. English proficiency test scores must be sent directly from the testing service. Please visit the Apply section for details.

Can my student apply for more than one U of T Engineering program?

Yes! Your student will have the opportunity to apply for up to four U of T Engineering programs in their Online Student Profile. Applicants are assessed in order of how they rank their program preferences. Students will only receive one offer of admission to U of T Engineering.  \

Can you share information with me about my student’s application to U of T Engineering?

Due to federal privacy laws, we are unable to share information about an application with anyone other than the applicant themselves. Please have your student check the Engineering Applicant Portal for updates on their application.

How will my student know when application and document deadlines are?

Students should keep track of these important deadlines. Throughout the application process, students should also check their Engineering Application Portal for details on any outstanding items the Admissions Committee requires. Additionally, all applicants to U of T Engineering will receive regular email communications with deadline reminders, important information about upcoming events and opportunities and more.

Students who are extended an offer of admission to U of T Engineering will receive information on the deadline to accept their offer.

When will students hear back with an admission decision?

Admission decisions are typically made between the months of February to May.

Is Toronto and the University of Toronto a safe place for my student to study?

Toronto is consistently ranked as one of the safest cities to live in in the world. According to the 2021 Safe City Index, Toronto ranked 1st in North America, and 2nd in the world. One of the best things about studying at U of T is its proximity to everything this vibrant city has to offer! Check out our Toronto page for more. \  \ The University of Toronto is a safe place to study. Some of the resources that students have access to keep themselves safe include TravelSafer, where a staff member will accompany students between University buildings, parking lots and transit stops near campus, and UTAlert, which allows the University to communicate quickly by sending important messages via email and text to the University community.

What is the cost of tuition?

University tuition costs are set each summer, prior to the start of the Fall Term. You can review the most recent tuition fees to assist with your financial planning. You may also find the University of Toronto’s financial planning calculator helpful.

When are tuition payments due?

In mid-July prior to the September start, students who have accepted their offer of admission will be able to view their invoice in ACORN, the University of Toronto’s student information services. At that time, students will need to make a payment or obtain an approved deferral to complete registration.

Students may pay the total amount or the minimum amount required as listed on their invoice. Fees need to be paid or deferred by mid-August. Tuition and non-tuition fees are billed on a yearly basis. However, students have the option to pay fees annually — Fall and Winter terms combined — or by individual terms.
