Extracurricular Opportunities

In addition to course work, there are multiple extracurricular opportunities that students interested in pre-health careers may find rewarding.

For students interested in pre-health careers, it is important to explore health care through opportunities that provide exposure, such as shadowing, and clinical experience, such as volunteer work in clinics and hospitals where interaction with patients can occur and where treatment that patients are receiving can be seen.

Shadowing: Stanford students who are sophomores, juniors and seniors can participate in the Stanford Immersion in Medicine Series (SIMS) program. SIMS provides undergraduates who are interested in pursuing medicine with an opportunity to shadow physicians at Stanford Hospital, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, and the Palo Alto VA Hospital over the course of an academic quarter.

Clinical Experience: In addition to exposure to health care, it is important for students interested in pre-health careers to experience what it's like to work in a setting where health care is provided to patients. There are many opportunities available to students on or near Stanford campus. Please see the Pre-health Volunteer Opportunities page (below) for ideas that may interest you.

Research opportunities: Many students interested in pre-health careers find getting started in research to be an especially rewarding and exciting endeavor. Stanford offers a multitude of research opportunities. If you have have conducted research while in high school you might want to continue in a given area or explore a new area. If you have not had the opportunity to conduct research before coming to Stanford, there are many opportunities to do so.
