The founding grant by Senator Leland Stanford and Jane Lathrop Stanford in 1885 conveyed to the university an endowment of approximately $20 million and the Stanfords' farm at Palo Alto. As of today, this original grant has grown into a sizeable endowment and an extensive physical plant located on a portion of the approximately 8,200 acres owned by the university.
