# Applying for a California REAL ID

A REAL ID is a more secure form of identification that is accepted by the U.S. federal government. This ID card will require more information and steps to obtain. If you would like to apply for a REAL ID, please read through the following.

- Proof of Residency for REAL ID Application
  - If you are applying for the California [REAL ID](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/real-id-checklist/), you will need *two* documents proving your local residence in California. Both documents must show your first and last name with the same mailing address that is listed on your REAL ID application.
