What's the Stanford-HBCU Exchange Program?
The Stanford-HBCU Exchange program formerly the Stanford Diversity Exchange Program, was established in 1978 to provide a cultural and academic enrichment experience for Stanford students in a Black institution of higher education. The Exchange now has three Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) participating: Howard University in Washington, DC and Morehouse College and Spelman College in Atlanta. Information on the schools may be found online at the school websites.

*The Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, defines an HBCU as: “…any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans, and that is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (U.S. Department of Education)

| [Paused until further notice] The Howard Exchange Program is the oldest of Stanford’s exchange programs and is located in the nation’s capital. It is a leading historically black university with a student body of over 12,000 which includes all racial groups and students from 90 countries. | Morehouse College is a black liberal arts college for educating men. It is located a mile west of downtown Atlanta - the cultural and economic center of the South. The college is considered a national resource for African American male leadership. It is noted for its tradition of educating men who have become accomplished and dynamic leaders in their professions. | Spelman College is a Black liberal arts college with more than 100 years of educating African American women. Spelman has a rich history where Sisterhood is at the heart of what is called the “Spelman experience.” It has been consistently ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the #1 HBCU in the country for 15 consecutive years and has also been ranked in the top 100 liberal arts colleges. Spelman invites women of all ethnic groups to join the sisterhood. |

Please note: Only undergraduates are able to participate in the exchange program. We are not accepting applications for participation in the Howard University exchange for the 2026-2027 academic year. Their exchange programs are currently paused
