General principles

The Australian National University is committed to compliance with the Copyright Act 1968 and upholding the rights of creators and users of copyright material.

A copyright guide has been prepared to assist higher degree students to understand the basics of copyright for their theses, publications and other work. Further general assistance can be found from the University Library.

If you need advice in relation to a University copyright matter and your question has not been resolved after reviewing the materials in this guide, you may contact the Library for further assistance.

Fair Dealing

Fair dealing for research or study applies only to private research and examination. It does not extend to publication. If you plan to publish your work in a journal or book, or make your thesis or article publicly available, you will usually need permission to use third‑party content unless another exception clearly applies, such as criticism or review with sufficient acknowledgement.
