## Admission Requirements

At a minimum, all applicants must meet program-specific academic/non-academic requirements, and English language requirements. Admission to most ANU programs is on a competitive basis. Therefore, meeting all admission requirements does not guarantee entry into the program.

In line with the university's admissions policy and strategic plan, an assessment for admission may include competitively ranking applicants on the basis of specific academic achievement, English language proficiency and diversity factors.

The University reserves the right to alter or discontinue its programs and change admission requirements as needed.

**Domestic applicants**

Before applying for a program, you should review the general information about [domestic undergraduate admission](https://www.anu.edu.au/domestic-undergraduate-admission) to ANU programs and how to apply, and the program-specific information below.

- Applicants with **recent secondary education** are assessed on:
  - completion of the Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (AQF) or equivalent and the minimum [Selection Rank](https://study.anu.edu.au/study-options/cohort-profile-and-atar-information) (from their academic qualifications, plus any [adjustment factors](https://study.anu.edu.au/apply/domestic-undergraduate/anu-adjustment-factors)) requirement for this program; and
  - English language proficiency; and
  - any program-specific requirements listed below.
- Applicants with **higher education study** are assessed on:
  - previous higher education studies; or secondary education results if the applicant has completed less than one year full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) of higher education; or the results from a tertiary preparation program; and
  - English language proficiency; and
  - any program-specific requirements listed below.
- Applicants with **vocational education and training (VET) study** are assessed on:
  - previously completed VET qualifications at [AQF](https://www.aqf.edu.au/) level 5 or higher (i.e. a Diploma or above); or secondary education results if the VET qualification is not completed; and
  - English language proficiency; and
  - any program-specific requirements listed below.
- Applicants with **work and life experience are assessed on:**
  - secondary education if the Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (AQF) or equivalent was completed; or the [Work and Life Experience Based entry scheme](https://study.anu.edu.au/apply/domestic-undergraduate/how-apply/work-and-life-experience-based-entry); and
  - English language proficiency; and
  - any program-specific requirements listed below.

**International applicants**

Applicants who complete a recognised secondary/senior secondary/post-secondary/tertiary sequence of study will be assessed on the basis of an equivalent selection rank that is calculated upon application. A list of commonly observed international qualifications and corresponding admission requirements can be found [here](https://study.anu.edu.au/apply/undergraduate-program-indicative-entry-requirements). Applicants must also meet any program specific requirements that are listed below.

*Diversity factors & English language proficiency*

As Australia's national university, ANU is global representative of Australian research and education. ANU endeavours to recruit and maintain a diverse and deliberate student cohort representative not only of Australia, but the world. In order to achieve these outcomes, competitive ranking of applicants may be adjusted to ensure access to ANU is a reality for brilliant students from countries across the globe. If required, competitive ranking may further be confirmed on the basis of demonstrating higher-level English language proficiency.

The Bachelor of Actuarial Studies is offered through the Research School
of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Applied Statistics. You will learn how to combine
skills from mathematics, statistics, economics, and finance to assess,
evaluate and manage future financial risk, thereby addressing a wide
range of practical problems in long-term financial planning and
management. Actuarial skills are utilised in many areas, including
insurance, superannuation, investment, banking, and government.

## Single degree

In a Bachelor of Actuarial Studies single degree program you will study a total of 24 courses (144 units).  Typically you will take 4 courses per semester (total of 24 units) as a full time student giving you a total of 24 courses across your whole degree. \
\
You will need to complete a minimum of 14 CBE courses (84 units) but will also get to choose 10 courses (60 units) from other ANU Colleges.  You can try a range of courses or take a major or minor in a non-CBE subject, the choice is yours.  \
\
Please note that in the suggested study plan, Finance courses are listed as suggested electives in order to maximise a student's chances at meeting the Actuaries Institute of Australia Foundation Exemptions \

\

## Double degree

In a double degree
program you will study a total of 14 core CBE
courses (84 units) and 2 elective
courses (12 units) towards the Bachelor of Actuarial Studies, and a further 16 or 24 courses (96 or 144 units)
towards the second degree.  \
\
Typically, you will take
4 courses per semester (total of 24 units) as a full time student giving you a
total of 32 or 40 courses (192 or 240 units) across your whole double
degree.  However, for each semester you are likely to take 2 courses from
your Actuarial Studies degree and 2 courses
from the other half of your double degree - totalling 4 courses a semester.

**Please note that in a double degree it may not be possible to gain full exemptions from IAAust Part I requirements (as you can only do 16 courses within the Bachelor of Actuarial Studies side), however you may meet the requirements by taking the additional courses as non-award study. Please contact CBE Student Services (info.cbe@anu.edu.au) if you wish to discuss this option.**

## Enrolment Status

It is possible to enrol in fewer
courses per semester but it will take you longer to finish your program and get
your degree. If you are an international student you must always be enrolled full-time in 24
units each semester, or have an approved [Reduced Study Load](https://www.anu.edu.au/students/program-administration/program-management/reducing-your-study-load-as-an-international-student-coursework).

## Important things to keep in mind when choosing your 1000-level courses

When you enrol for the first time you will study ‘1000-level’
courses. These courses have ‘1’ as the first number in their course
code, such as [ECON1101](https://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/2026/course/ECON1101), and are typically referred to as 'First Year Courses'.\
\
Please also note that:\

- You need to enrol in courses for both First Semester and Second Semester.

- In your first year, you cannot study more than four courses (24 units) per semester, eight for the year.

- You
may take 1000-level courses later in your program.  There is a maximum of 10 courses (60 units) of
1000-level courses in a single degree, and a maximum of 8 courses (48 units) of
1000-level courses in the CBE half of a double degree.

- You can change your enrolment in courses via self enrolment up until the Monday of Week 2.

## Electives

You can use your
electives to enrol in any courses that you like, provided you meet prerequisite
requirements.

Remember that you can
choose up to 10 ANU wide elective courses if you are
undertaking the single Bachelor of Actuarial Studies degree.  If you are in a double degree, you can choose 2 ANU wide elective courses.

## Academic Advice

You may choose to take two MATH courses instead of [MATH1113](https://studyat.anu.edu.au/2013/courses/MATH1113;details.html).  The options are [MATH1013](https://studyat.anu.edu.au/2013/courses/MATH1013;details.html)/[1014](http://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/course/MATH1014) or [MATH1115](https://studyat.anu.edu.au/2013/courses/MATH1115;details.html)/[1116](http://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/course/MATH1116). \
\
[MATH1013](https://studyat.anu.edu.au/2013/courses/MATH1013;details.html)/[1014](http://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/course/MATH1014)
is recommended for students with the bare minimum of mathematical
background for the Bachelor of Actuarial Studies or for those not
confident in their mathematical ability.  [MATH1115](https://studyat.anu.edu.au/2013/courses/MATH1115;details.html)/[1116](http://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/course/MATH1116) is a higher level of [MATH1013](https://studyat.anu.edu.au/2013/courses/MATH1013;details.html)/[1014](http://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/course/MATH1014) and is recommended for those who are considering further mathematical study.  \
\
Should two MATH courses be chosen, the second course (either [MATH1014](https://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/2026/course/MATH1014) or [MATH1116](https://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/2026/course/MATH1116)) will be taken as an elective.  Please discuss your amended study plan with the CBE Student Services Team (info.cbe@anu.edu.au) to ensure you are able to progress though the degree. \
