This course focuses on the language of mathematical arguments. Rather than attacking advanced topics, we will use simple mathematics to develop an understanding of how results are established. We begin with clearly stated and plausible assumptions or axioms and then develop a more and more complex theory from them. The course, and the lecturer, will have succeeded if you finish the course able to construct valid arguments of your own and to criticise those that are presented to you.
## Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
1. Understand the role of rigorous proof in mathematics.\
2. Demonstrate facility with a range of mathematical and logical arguments.
3. Develop problem-solving skills in elementary number theory, graph theory, and probability theory.

Students with excellent results in either the ACT Specialist Mathematics double major, NSW HSC Mathematics Extension 2 or equivalent may take this course in first year, if taken alongside [MATH1115](https://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/2026/course/MATH1115)
## Indicative Assessment
1. Regular written problem sets (30) [LO 1,2,3]

3. Workshop quizzes (20) [LO 1,2,3]

## Workload
The expected workload will consist of approximately 130 hours throughout the semester as follows:
• Face-to-face component which will consist of 3x1 hours lectures per week (approximately 36 hours total) and 1x1 hour workshop for 10 weeks (10 hours).
• Approximately 84 hours of self-directed study which will include preparation for lectures, workshops, assignments, and exams.

## Requisite and Incompatibility
Students with excellent results in either the ACT Specialist Mathematics double major, NSW HSC Mathematics Extension 2 or equivalent may take this course together with [MATH1115](https://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/2026/course/MATH1115) in the first year. For many students taking [MATH1115](https://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/2026/course/MATH1115) in their first year, [MATH1005](https://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/2026/course/MATH1005) would be a more appropriate companion choice. If you are not sure which courses to take in your first year, please consult the MSI First-year Coordinator.
All other students may enrol in this course if they have completed [MATH1116](https://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/2026/course/MATH1116) with a mark of at least 50, or [MATH1113](https://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/2026/course/MATH1113) with a mark of at least 60, or [MATH1005](https://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/2026/course/MATH1005) with a mark of at least 70, or [MATH1013](https://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/2026/course/MATH1013) or [MATH1014](https://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/2026/course/MATH1014) with a mark of at least 80.
