The DAE focuses on health security research and education that impacts the Asia-Pacific region. Our expertise reflects this and encompasses a wide range of topics including both infectious and non-infectious disease epidemiology. Our research and education strengths in infectious disease epidemiology include public health surveillance, outbreak investigation, and food safety and security. Our non-infectious disease epidemiology research includes community nutrition, biostatistics, mathematical modelling, implementation science, burden of disease assessment, environmental science, neglected tropical diseases and health service research. The Department works in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams to conduct ground-breaking research in collaboration with national and international policymakers, end users and subject experts, to build regional capability and identify solutions to health risks of public importance.

Our department also has a strong focus on training the next generation of public health workforce. We are active in the following programs:

1. The Master of Philosophy in Applied Epidemiology, Australia’s field epidemiology training program (FETP)
2. DAE staff are active in PhD supervision attracting leading scholars from around the world
3. Our staff lead the Master of Public Health program at NCEPH and are responsible for courses in Public Health Surveillance, Outbreak Investigation, and Global Population Health
