The University Legal Office is responsible for the provision of all legal services to ANU, directed to ensuring the University meets its strategic objectives. The Legal Office provides assurance that the way ANU proposes to act is legally defensible, within the scope of the University's powers, and that all legal risks are appropriately identified and managed to the University's benefit.
The University Legal Office provides its services to ANU through the Executive, Administrative and Academic units. It does not provide personal legal services to members of staff or students. Students have access to a free legal service provided by ANUSA.
Legal advice or assistance, for all ANU's business, may only be provided by, or via, the University Legal Office.

Our services
When providing its services, the University Legal Office strives at all times to be professional, pragmatic and relevant. The legal services we provide include:
- General legal advice
- Advice on intellectual property issues
- Dispute resolution
- Litigation
- Drafting and negotiating research and commercial contracts
- Drafting and negotiating commercial licences and leases
- Interpretation of legislation
- Providing precedent legal documents
- Liaising with and instructing external lawyers.
