Application Guidelines

Applicants are required to read and to understand the following application guidelines carefully before completing any part of the application form.

IMPORTANT

Complete all sections in English.
As the online application system only allows filled information to be saved at the end, make sure to prepare your personal statement and the required documents in advance.
Once submitted, you cannot make changes to your application. It is your responsibility to ensure that the form has been completed as required and that there are no mistakes.
If multiple applications are submitted, only the first will be accepted.
Late or incomplete applications are not accepted or considered. We will not respond to any inquiries or requests received after the deadline.

1. Personal Information

You are required to provide the following personal information.

Personal Data : Enter all personal data exactly as it appears on your passport.
Mailing Address + Phone Number : Provide your mailing address (all official documents will be sent to this address) and phone number (beginning with an international country code).
Permanent Address + Phone Number : Provide your permanent address (i.e. parent's, legal guardian's) and phone number (if different from above).
Email Address: Provide an email address that you check regularly as this will be used for all correspondence. \ (To ensure you receive our emails, please add noreply@adm.s.u-tokyo.ac.jp and gscoffice.s@gs.mail.u-tokyo.ac.jp to your address book or safe senders list in your email account.)

2. Educational Background

You are required to list all secondary (junior and senior high school from 7th grade to 12th grade) and post-secondary (min. 2 years of university) educational institutions you attended.

3. English Language Qualifications

4. Personal Statement

The personal statement is intended to provide additional information to learn about and evaluate applicants. It is important that the statement demonstrates your ability to develop and communicate your thoughts.
You are required to provide a personal statement in English that addresses the following questions. (1,000-word limit):
The reason you wish to apply to the Global Science Course at the University of Tokyo.
Describe and discuss any academic experiences or challenges faced during your undergraduate study that influenced your intellectual growth, how you overcame them and/or lessons you learned.
Your interest in pursuing Chemistry as a major and what academic as well as future goals you have set for yourself.

5. Additional Information

You are encouraged to list any significant academic achievements or awards/honors you have received, as well as any extracurricular activities (e.g. internship, volunteer) in which you have participated. (500-word limit each)

6. Evaluation

You are required to provide the contact information of two of your academic evaluators from your current university.

*Name of academic positions may vary depending on your country. - The email addresses provided must be official university email addresses. - Once your application is submitted, the URL to the online evaluation form will be auto-sent to your evaluators via email. - A confirmation email will be sent to you once the evaluation forms are successfully submitted. It is your responsibility to remind them if necessary. - Please ensure in advance that they are willing and able to provide an evaluation for you by the given deadline. We do not accept late submissions or any changes in evaluators.

7. Application Fee

You are required to pay a non-refundable application fee (10,000 Japanese Yen + processing fee) online and then upload the payment receipt to 8. Required documents.

Payment must be made by selecting: Pay Application Fee → Examination Fee → The University of Tokyo (GSC Undergraduate Transfer Program)
Payment can only be made by credit card.

8. Required Documents

You are required to prepare and to submit all required documents by uploading them onto the application form.

NOTE

All documents must be submitted in English.
If the documents are not in English, an officially certified translation must be submitted along with the unaltered, original documents.
Documents 8.3, 8.4, 8.7, and 8.8 must be issued on or after Jan. 20, 2026.
If the documents do not include all of the information required, the missing information must be provided along with a confirmation signature from a school official (i.e. registrar).
If successfully admitted to GSC, original documents (or certified true copies) must be submitted via postal mail along with your final transcript before official enrollment.
All application documents submitted will not be returned under any circumstances.

8.1 Official Secondary School (7th to 12th) Transcript(s)

The scanned copies of transcripts must include:
Name of institution
Month/Year of admission
Month/Year of graduation
List of classes completed (incl. class titles, grades)

8.2 Official Secondary School Standardized Exam Result / Qualifications (e.g. High School Diploma, A-level, IB)

8.3 Official University Transcript(s)

The scanned copies of transcripts must include:
Name of university
Month/Year of admission
List of classes completed and currently in progress (incl. class titles, grades, and credits)

8.4 Enrollment Verification Certificate (Certificate of Enrollment)

An Enrollment Verification Certificate is required to verify your full-time student status at your current university.
The scanned copy of the certificate must include:
Name of university and school / department
Month/Year of admission
Current year of study
Expected graduation date

8.5 Syllabi

The official syllabus for all science (Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Biology) classes you have successfully completed at your university are required.
The scanned copies of syllabus must include:
Class title
Class description
Textbook information (author, title, and edition)
Class hours and credit hours
Grading scale
The above information must be clearly indicated by highlighting it on each syllabus.

8.6 Copy of Passport (Photo ID page)

If you have multiple citizenships, copies of all your passports must be submitted.

9. Declaration

At the end of the online application, you are required to sign the declaration electronically.

10. Other Points to Note

The University of Tokyo has established the “The University of Tokyo Security Export Control Regulations” in accordance with Japan’s “Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act”, and rigorously implements security export control for potential students before and after their enrollment on the basis of these regulations. In particular, pre-enrollment screenings are mandatory for all international students and also for Japanese students in certain circumstances. Please be aware that applicants who fall under any of the conditions set out in the Act may not receive permission to enroll at the university or may have their research activities restricted after their enrollment even if they have passed the entrance examinations.
