What kind of accommodation is available at the University? Is it mandatory to stay there? : All PEAK students have the option of living in UTokyo Accommodation for their first year of study.\ The accommodation assignment is subject to change, based on availability. The dormitory is optional and you can choose whether you move into the dormitory or not during the enrollment procedure. However, if you did not move into the dormitory when you started your university course, it would be deemed that you have waived your right to a room.\ For more information, please visit the Housing Office’s website.\

Does the University of Tokyo offer undergraduate programs taught in English other than PEAK? : Currently, other courses are only offered in Japanese. We have a different screening for those courses, and applicants will be required to take entrance examinations in Japanese in Japan. Am I eligible to be exempt from submitting English proficiency test? : If you have, or will have received an English-medium education for AT LEAST nine years of their schooling before receipt of their high school diploma AND AT LEAST five of the last six years of their schooling before receipt of their high school diploma, you are considered to be exempt from submitting English test scores, such as TOEFL or IELTS. Please refer to the Official Test Scores for English Proficiency section of the Application Guidelines for more information.

When are you going to announce the time schedule of the application for new enrollment? : Usually the new Application Guidelines are released on our website in July every year. Until the new updated version is uploaded, please read the old Application Guidelines to have an idea of the flow.

What is the application process? : We have two screenings; the first screening, which is a document review, and the second screening, which is an interview. Applicants selected from the first screening will proceed to the second screening. At the interview, the applicant may be asked to provide written answers to questions provided by the interviewers. Additionally, Environmental Sciences applicants will be required to take an online mathematics examination before the interview. Please refer to the Application Guidelines about the application process.

My qualification is not listed in Appendix 1 of the Application Guidelines. Does it mean I will not be able to apply? : Generally, we only approve the examinations listed in Appendix 1 of the Application Guidelines for PEAK entrance screening. For other examinations or qualifications, we would determine on an individual basis, so please contact us through Contact Us by the designated deadline.\

What are the acceptance rates? : We do not release acceptance rates. However, there is some data that you may refer to on our PEAK Admission Statistics page.

When do I find out whether I will be receiving a scholarship? : Offers of the scholarships, which are all merit-based, will be made at the same time of admission decision. However, depending on the availability, we may be able to offer scholarships after that.

How long do I have before I decide whether I will accept the admissions offer? : In case of September 2025 enrollment, admission decisions will be announced on March 28, 2025 and the Letter of Intent must be submitted to the PEAK Undergraduate Admissions Office no later than May 7, 2025.\ \ Please read the Application Guidelines under "Overview of the Application Process".

What kind of subjects should I have studied to enter the PEAK program? : Students applying to the PEAK programs are expected to have studied subjects that are related with the respective programs. There are two courses offered in PEAK, and each have different requirements. For further information, check the Expected Background Knowledge for Japan in East Asia and Environmental Sciences .

How much is the tuition? : Admission fee paid upon enrollment: JPY282,000 (as of 2025)\ Annual tuition: JPY642,960 (as of 2025)\ The fee is the same for everyone. There is no separate rate for international students. Please note that the fees are subject to change.\

Who will be teaching the PEAK classes? : Some of the classes will be taught by professors who have received their degrees outside of Japan, appointed specifically for this program. In addition, as both programs are interdisciplinary and broad-based in scope, classes will also be offered by other faculty members from a wide range of departments across the University.\ \ Please refer to PEAK People.

Do I need to have studied Japanese to apply to the PEAK program? : No, there is no need to have studied Japanese in advance when applying. Japanese language courses,, which are divided into learning levels from students with little background in Japanese to those with high Japanese proficiency, are provided as a mandatory course in PEAK.

Can I transfer from another university? : No, you cannot. The University of Tokyo does not accept transfer students except for GSC (Global Science Course). You can apply to our PEAK program, but the university level credits you have earned elsewhere cannot be transferred to your credits at this University. As for GSC, please visit their website and contact them directly should you have any questions.
