Profile
Prof. Hiraoka obtained his Ph.D. from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1998. After postdoctoral research at the Institute for Molecular Science with Makoto Fujita, he joined the Department of Applied Chemistry, Kanagawa University as an Assistant Professor in 1999. In 2000, he joined the Department of Chemistry, the University of Tokyo as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2007. He has been a Professor in the Department of Basic Science, the University of Tokyo since 2010. His research interests include molecular self-assembly processes, kinetic control of molecular self-assembly to create metastable assemblies, development of discrete molecular self-assemblies in water by making the best use of van der Waals interactions and the hydrophobic effect, and artificial chemical systems like living systems based on molecular self-assembly.
