理系の1年生がSセメスターに学ぶ熱力学では状態を表す関数が多変数関数であるため状態の変化は多変数関数の微分によって表されます。しかし、大学に入学したばかりの1年生のほとんどは多変数関数の微分どころか多変数関数に触れたことさえありません。一方、多変数関数の微分が数学の講義で扱われるのは(S1タームで少し扱われるものの)S2タームの後半からAセメスターにかけてで、しかも、3, 4回程で足早に説明されることがほとんどです。そこで、このゼミナールでは、熱力学の講義に間に合うことにも配慮しながら多変数関数の微分を13回かけてゆっくりと学びます。必要なことは熱力学の講義でも説明されるし、少し待てば数学の講義でも学ぶ内容なので、数学が気になって熱力学の内容に集中できない人や、数学が苦手で見たこともない数学の記号が出てきただけでめまいがして熱力学どころではなくなってしまう、というような人を念頭において話を進める予定です。 なお、熱力学の物理学としての内容には一切触れないし、熱力学で使う数学のすべてを網羅するものでもありません。逆に、熱力学には出てこなくても多変数関数の微分の観点から外せない内容は扱います。あくまでも数学の授業です。誤解のないようにお願いします。また、1変数関数の微分をよく理解していることを前提にしないので、多変数関数の微分とはどんなものかということに興味のある文系の学生も歓迎します。

複素函数論の基本的な事柄を学ぶ. 複素函数の中でも, 特に正則函数の持ついくつもの美しい性質について, 具体例を交えつつ学ぶ. 収束冪級数展開をもとに, 三角関数, 指数関数や対数関数などの実函数の定義域を複素数に拡張したものは正則函数の例となっている. 正則函数の複素積分におけるコーシーの定理や, 留数定理による積分計算法は応用上も非常に重要である.
