ASHBi > Careers > Study at ASHBi
We welcome highly motivated graduate students who wish to join ASHBi. To study at ASHBi, we would suggest you to first determine the Principal Investigator (PI) & research group where you wish to do research.
Since ASHBi does not have its own graduate courses, you need to enter one of the graduate schools at Kyoto University. Some of our PIs have a position in the graduate schools and can become a host supervisor of you directly. Otherwise, PIs may also supervise you with the consent of the graduate school in which you are enrolled. Application procedures and conditions may vary between the PI groups and that the candidates should first contact the respective PI.\ You can send an e-mail by clicking the “Contact” button located at “Research Group” page on this website.
Application steps for Admission
Step 1
Contact ASHBi PI(s) and decide host supervisor in the graduate school in which you wish to study.
*Entrustment of Research Supervision: Some ASHBi PIs do not hold a position within the Graduate School. In this case, you need to obtain approval from another professor in that school to serve as your host professor. With this approval, you will be able to pursue your research under the ASHBi PI’s supervision. Please seek advice from ASHBi PI regarding this process.
Step 2
Students who graduate overseas (non-Japanese) universities are required to contact the Admissions Assistance Office (AAO) for a preliminary review before submitting application documents. You should go through AAO process no later than about three months before the application deadline for the entrance examination.

Step 3
After receiving the acceptance through AAO, you can start the applying process for the entrance examination of a graduate school you are interested in.

A wide variety of scholarship programs are available for foreign students in Kyoto University. The major scholarships run by the Japanese government or public institutions are listed below.
Japanese government / public institutions Scholarships
This scholarship is funded by MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology).
Note:\ If you are applying for MEXT scholarship, the application should be made before arriving in Japan and its process takes up to one year. In graduate schools of Kyoto University, international students sponsored by the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships generally enroll as non-degree students (Research Students) at first. After passing the entrance examination, they are admitted to the regular graduate program. Therefore, it takes almost two years from the application for the Japanese government scholarship to the enrollment as a graduate student. Please prepare as soon as you can.
