In the Department of Psychology, we conduct scientific experiments and observations with the aim of elucidating the functions of the mind and their underlying brain mechanisms. Three main fields comprise our research and educational pursuits. First, basic psychology examines the functions of intelligence and emotion, and their evolution and development in adults, infants and non-human animals. Second, experimental psychology analyses cognitive functions such as memory and perception, and how they develop over the lifespan using precise experimental methods and brain imaging techniques. Third, basic behavioural science discerns the mechanisms underlying behaviours by investigating their neural functions and constructing models. Together, these interrelated fields offer students the opportunity to gain both broad and specialised knowledge in these core areas of psychology.\ \ After completing our programs, students pursue careers in research and education, as well as a variety of other sectors including, but not limited to; broadcasting, journalism, publishing, finance and manufacturing.\ \ Department of Psychology staff belong to the Kyoto University Psychological Science Unit, which offers cross-departmental educational and research programmes.
