CiRA intern Maya Hemmi on her experience at the Woltjen Lab

This summer, 2nd year undergraduate student Maya Hemmi joined the Woltjen Lab as part of the CiRA Internship Program for six weeks. During her stay, she cultured and created a disease-causing mutation using gene editing in iPS cells.

“I strengthened practical lab skills, gained deeper insight into the field, and built meaningful connections with great mentors,” Maya said. “This experience has shaped how I think about research and the direction I hope to take moving forward.”

The CiRA Research Internship Program offers short research placements for undergraduate and graduate students. The program is also great avenue to start/continue an academic career as a Master’s or Ph.D. student in Kyoto University! While the 2026 call is not yet open, the application deadline for the 2025 call for overseas students was early February so be on the look out! For details, visit the CiRA Internship website.
