2026 CiRA Research Internship Program

The CiRA Research Internship Program welcomes graduate students and undergraduates to conduct research at CiRA for a short period. \ \ We introduce a few participants of this year's CiRA Research Internship Program in a series of short articles on CiRA Reporter.

Application Guidelines for \ CiRA Research Internship Program in 2026

Eligibility Undergraduate (mainly the 3rd and 4th year※) and graduate students who wish to enroll in CiRA ※This program is primarily intended for students planning to enter graduate school within one or two years.
Period 1-6 consecutive weeks during summer 2026 - Overseas university students: From June to October - Domestic university students: From July to October - Overseas university students: From June to October - Domestic university students: From July to October ※Depends on host labs ※Excluding summer holidays of CiRA (August 10 to 14)

Participation fee - Overseas university student: 29,700 yen per month※ - Domestic university student: Free - Overseas university student: 29,700 yen per month※ - Domestic university student: Free --- ※Overseas university students will be accepted under the Kyoto University Short-Term International Student System. - Short-term international students ※This fee is waived for students affiliated with overseas universities with an Academic Exchange Agreement with Kyoto University. Transportation and accommodation expenses Partially covered※ - Transportation expenses: Expenses for a round trip to CiRA - Accommodation expenses: Maximum 5,500 yen per day - Travel expenses: Expenses for a round trip to CiRA - Accommodation expenses: Maximum 5,500 yen per day --- ※In principle, domestic university students will receive a bank transfer payment after the internship, and overseas university students will receive a cash payment (in Japanese yen) during their stay. ※Travel expenses are paid in accordance with the Kyoto University Regulations. Please note that travel and other related expenses will not be provided when you have any private matters unrelated to the internship before and/or after the program, such as traveling or going home for holidays.
Number of positions Each lab can host a maximum of two students, with up to one from an overseas university (depending on the labs).
Responsibilities - Engage in research activities in the lab - Observe and conduct basic experiments - You are required to give a presentation on research results during the participation period

※1 You are encouraged to check the research interests of the laboratories in which you wish to do your internship and contact the PIs by E-mail in advance. Please refer to the following research descriptions and lab websites.

※2 Fill out the required information on the application and submit it along with other documents after obtaining consent from your home university supervisor.

※3 If you have difficulty submitting the documents via the web form, we also accept submissions by E-mail. Please submit all application materials by the deadline to the CiRA General Affairs Section (cira-internship*cira.kyoto-u.ac.jp). (Please change * to @) \ \ For E-mail submissions, you will be notified of receipt of your application within 5 working days of submission. If you do not receive the reply within 5 working days, please contact the address above, as your application may not have been received.

※4 Notification of decisions is expected by the end of March for overseas university students and by the end of June for domestic university students.

※5 After the decision of acceptance, participants will be required to have Personal Accident Insurance and Personal Liability Insurance valid during the program period.
