Next steps
If you have a clear idea of where you want to do your placement
Spend time researching the company and their recruitment processes.
- Read the employers own website and follow their social media pages.
- Take a look at websites like Glassdoor (a bit like TripAdvisor for Employers) and RateMyPlacement for further insights.
- Ask your Placement Lead/Careers Service if they have any further information on the employers.
The Careers Service can help you to tailor your application once you are ready to apply. Take advantage of all the activities on campus around interviewing practice and assessment centres.
If you are still considering if a placement year is right for you
- Speak to your course placement lead about potential options or book an appointment for some careers guidance as an initial starting point.
- Take a look at what students on your course in previous years did on their placement (either via LinkedIn or Faculty intranet) as inspiration.
If your course does not currently offer a placement option
There may be the possibility to interrupt your studies for one year, talk to your local course staff to get advice about this.
You can find a lot of support around placements at the University of Manchester – here are some good starting points for you:
- Read Placements handbook on Blackboard/Course Intranet (contains information about eligibility criteria)
- Talk to a student who has completed a placement from your course
- Connect with the Careers Team or visit our careers website. Appointments, researching a job and CV building.
- Where you can attend Employer Events on campus. Find information about employer’s events on CareerConnect.
- Email placement questions: placements@manchester.ac.uk
It’s a brilliant experience; my placement year was definitely the highlight of my degree, and was the most valuable thing I could have done in helping me to secure a job and a career. I’d recommend a placement to everyone – it’s an invaluable opportunity to get the experience that employers are looking for, to build up your skills and get an idea of what a graduate job will be like.Ashleigh
