We offer a range of scholarships, studentships, and awards to support your PhD research.

Finding funding

How to be considered

In section 9 of the application form, we ask about your intended funding sources. Please include all the funding competitions you'd like to be considered for. There's no limit to how many you can enter, but to be considered, each one must be listed in this section.

The section first asks 'Have you secured or do you intend to apply for funding to cover the cost of your studies?'.

To enter an internal competition, please add a funding source, and populate the fields as below:

The remainder of the boxes may be left blank. Please give any further relevant details in the 'any other comments' box. Select Add+ to detail further competitions.

Each of our Schools has its own deadline for internal funding consideration:

External funding

Each external funding competition – for example, the ESRC NWSSDTP – has two key deadlines: one for submitting your funding application, and an earlier one for submitting your online programme application. You’ll find both deadlines clearly stated on the relevant funding competition pages. You can search our available funding on our list of awards.

Supervisor-led projects

You may choose to apply for a supervisor-led project. Undertaking a defined project allows you to contribute to ongoing research and make a difference to an identified challenge in the field of Humanities.

Unless specified in the advert, you won’t need to submit a research proposal, you'll just need the relevant project title and supervisor(s). Details on how to apply are given on the project page.

Other funding sources

You’re also encouraged to explore other potential funding sources – for example, your home government, Ministry of Education or employer – to see if there are awards available to support your research.

If you’re studying a PhD or an equivalent doctoral programme, including professional doctorates, you may be eligible for a UK government doctoral loan.

To apply, you must be a UK national, ordinarily resident in England, aged 59 or under, and not already receiving funding from a UK Research Council.

More information can be found on our explore other funding options page.
