Careers advice and guidance appointments
We offer a variety of appointment types and lengths throughout the year to enable access by as many students and graduates as possible. You may find you have different appointments available to you based on your year of study, and the time of year.
Our appointments aim to help you:
- Understand how the careers service can support you during and after your time at The University of Manchester
- Identify suitable resources and support relating to your needs and circumstances
- Understand your strengths, motivations, interests and values
- Understand your university and work-related skills, knowledge and abilities
- Explore gaining experience, including part time jobs , internships and or placements.
- Research career options and work or further study opportunities
- Explore your future options and make decisions
- Understand the job market, and feel equipped to research relevant options
- Grow in career confidence and feel ready to take action
- Find out more about how to prepare for your appointment
Careers Advice and Guidance Appointments
The appointment types you see will be determined by the faculty that your degree is in.
To minimise waiting times Humanities students will need a referral in order to book a 30 minute appointment.
- First book a 15 minute Careers Advice appointment.
- If your query needs a referral (eg. more time needed due to complexity) this will be allocated to you by the adviser and you will see this on your CareerConnect account.
- You can then book your 30 minute referral appointment.
Careers Advice Appointments (15 mins)
Bookable 14 working days in advance. You may book 1 in 30 days.
- Suitable for quick questions or just some help getting started. Talk to us about exploring options, looking for experience, considering further study or quick tips and advice on applications and interviews.
Careers Guidance Appointments (30 mins)
Bookable 14 working days in advance. You may book 1 in 30 days. The appointment types you see will be determined by the faculty that your degree is in.
- Suitable for exploring career options including work and further study and making career decisions.
- You can also talk to us about identifying your skills and strengths motivations and values.
- Review interview or assessment centre feedback and discuss strategies to improve your performance.
Career planning with a disability or health concern - up to 60 minutes
Bookable 30 working days in advance. You may book 1 in 30 days. The appointment type you see will be determined by the faculty that your degree is in. Advisors and Consultants can help on any career area.
- Suitable for discussion of disability or health issues affecting career planning. For reasonable adjustments and discussion re disability and career choice/work experience. Please note that a formal diagnosis or support plan is not a requirement for this appointment, you may discuss concerns affecting you prior to seeking any other forms of assistance if they are required.

For Graduates
Appointments for those who have finished their course within the last two years.
Bookable 14 working days in advance. You may book 1 in 30 days.
Careers Guidance Appointment (30 mins) for Graduates / Alumni
- Suitable for discussing; careers queries such as I don’t know what to do, or I am considering further study/research. Career options and transitioning from university to your next steps, pathways into different industries, job search strategies, succeeding in your first graduate job or career changes.
Graduate Information and Advice Appointment (20mins)
- Suitable for shorter conversations to help you explore options, look for experience/jobs, considering further study, quick tips and advice on applications and interviews.
To book an appointment
- Book online via CareerConnect
- Check the location of the appointment on screen before booking. Choose an online - Virtual appointment, or a campus location convenient to you.
- Online appointments are conducted via Zoom, you will be emailed a link when you book please keep this email. Students will receive an Outlook calendar notification other email providers may also be compatible. You don’t need a zoom account for this appointment, just click on the link for access.
- A missed appointment will count as one of your allocation. Please cancel via CareerConnect before the appointment start time in you cannot attend.
All of our advisors regardless of gender, race or nationality, are equally trained and are equipped to advise all students.
Further information
It can be hard when you start planning for your future after university. You are not alone in worrying about what you want to do, whether it is achievable, whether you are good enough and what others expect of you. Many students feel concerned about the next steps, so we have developed a set of resources to help you feel more supported as you start to consider your options and make applications.
We don't:
- Tell you what to do. We are impartial and non-directive in our professional approach.
- Do all your research for you, we can tell you where to start and offer you some direction.
- Approach employers on your behalf.
- Offer legal advice.

A very supportive environment… I was very nervous about being judged on my current understanding of the job market… but I have come out of that meeting feeling very motivated and ready to go!
