Working in the UK after study
If you’re aiming to work in the UK after your studies, be prepared, it’s possible, but very competitive. Start learning about the process early and begin searching for job opportunities as soon as you can. The Graduate and Skilled Worker visas are the most common ways in which students choose to pursue employment in the UK following their studies, but it’s important that you consider which one is going to be the most convenient to you and your career.
Graduate Visa
A short-term visa to gain additional experience in the UK. The current scheme allows:
- International students who have successfully completed an undergraduate or Masters degree are able to remain in the UK for work for two years after graduation, through the Graduate Visa route, as long as they apply before 1 January 2027. The duration of the Graduate Visa route for applicants after that date will be eighteen months.
- PhD students who successfully complete their course will be able to stay for up to three years.
The work can be in any sector and at any level* without any minimum salary requirements or the need for visa sponsorship. It can be useful for new graduates/postgraduates looking to gain work experience before returning home, or for those looking to gain experience and then look for an opportunity to switch to a Skilled Worker visa.
*except working as a professional sportsperson or coach

Skilled Worker Route
A sponsored visa with a UK employer.
- For this visa you must be sponsored by an employer with a Skilled Worker license.
- Not all employers who hold a licence may be able to recruit international applicants into the position you are applying to, however many companies who do not yet hold a license may apply for one if they find the right candidate.

Note: Once you are fully registered as a UoM student (for most students this is during or after Welcome Week in September), you’ll have access to the interactive "Target the right employer" course via CareerConnect where you can find information on sponsoring employers and the best way to approach your job search.
