## Independent Students

The Careers Service at The University of Manchester offers bespoke support to students who are [Care experienced](https://www.studentsupport.manchester.ac.uk/tailored-support/careexperiencedstudents/) or [Estranged](https://www.studentsupport.manchester.ac.uk/tailored-support/estrangedstudents/) from their families / parents / carers. Throughout your degree and for up to two years after you complete your course, you have access to professional and impartial careers information, advice and guidance.

There is a wealth of opportunity for you to access as a student and recent graduate. You can undertake part-time work experience opportunities, travel to other countries to build your networks and confidence, bursaries to support work experiences, and so much more. #### Your dedicated Careers Consultants

As an Independent Student you have a dedicated Careers Consultant to support you, whether that be the Explore, Prepare or Apply stage. We are here to support you as an individual and help you succeed in the future!

- Adam Taylor oversees the Careers Desk in the Atrium in University Place, as well as runs a series of Careers workshops throughout the year on a range of subjects including CVs, interviews and how to work out what you want to do with your degree. ### Build experience

Whatever your interest, there are different ways to build experience and below, we have highlighted some of the opportunities that are popular with our Independent Students here at The University of Manchester.

- [Part-time jobs](https://www.careers.manchester.ac.uk/experience/parttime/) Learn about ways to access part-time jobs to support you financially and help you develop skills. Look out for jobs within the University of Manchester many of which are advertised on CareerConnect.
- [Student Partner Intern jobs](https://www.yoursay.manchester.ac.uk/partners-and-consultations/)  Student Partner Intern roles are paid jobs supporting a variety of projects and teams across the University of Manchester. These jobs are advertised on CareerConnect on an ad hoc basis with the majority of opportunities advertised from April onwards.
- [Student Ambassador roles. Email: asesdambassadors@manchester.ac.uk](mailto:asesdambassadors@manchester.ac.uk)  As an Independent Student you are automatically eligible to be a Student Ambassador. Information about these roles will be sent via email, normally over the summer with a possibility of more opportunities in September. These roles are recruited for at set times of the year not on an ad hoc basis. If you have questions about being a Student Ambassador please email: asesdambassadors@manchester.ac.uk
- [CareerConnect](https://www.careers.manchester.ac.uk/aboutus/aboutcareerconnect/) CareerConnect is the Careers Service’s platform which advertises exclusive job opportunities, workshops, and employer events. It is also where you book careers appointments.
- [upReach](https://upreach.org.uk/apply-now/) Personalised support as well as networking and internship opportunities for students who meet their eligibility criteria.
- [Global Graduates](https://www.careers.manchester.ac.uk/experience/globalgraduates/) A fully funded week where you can visit a city across the globe meeting with alumni from a range of business and industry sectors.
- [Work experience bursaries](https://www.careers.manchester.ac.uk/experience/bursaries/) The scheme offers financial support for full time undergraduates of all years to undertake career enhancing work experience.
- [Mentoring](https://www.careers.manchester.ac.uk/experience/mentoring/) Apply to access a mentor who can provide you with industry specialist knowledge and support you with career planning.
- [Student Experience Internships](https://www.careers.manchester.ac.uk/experience/internships/2ndyear/sei/) Student experience internships are paid opportunities for students in the penultimate year of their studies.
- [School of Biological Sciences Summer Research Placements](https://livemanchesterac.sharepoint.com/sites/UOM-FBMH-SBS-StudentInformation/SitePages/Careers.aspx?CT=1756911359862&OR=OWA-NT-Mail&CID=a9bf5580-cd7a-42ed-96a3-8e83e9e2df4b) These are exclusive opportunities for students studying subjects within the School of Biological Sciences.
