BA in Art: Painting + Drawing

The BA in Art with a concentration in Painting + Drawing provides the intellectual, creative, and physical environment that best fosters excellence in painting and drawing for students and faculty. The first step to successful work in painting and drawing is a firm basis in the fundamentals of drawing. From that basis, the program provides a comprehensive education in drawing and painting, which stresses both breadth and depth. An awareness of the breadth of what has been done in the past and what is being done in the present encourages students to relate their own practice to both history and the contemporary context.

Admissions

The BA in Art is an open major with minimum requirements. The admission process is the same for all the concentrations.

BA in Art Admissions

Degree Requirements

Students in the Art major graduate with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Art. To graduate from the University of Washington, students must complete at least 180 course credits: a combination of UW general education requirements, major requirements, and electives.

Major Requirements

Art majors must satisfactorily complete 55 credits of ART classes (at least 40 credits must be at UW) and 15 credits in Art History for a total of 70 credits with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 in the required courses:

Note: Only the Painting + Drawing concentration requires 15 credits of 300-level and 20 credits of 400-level courses. Other art concentrations require 20 credits of 300-level and 15 credits of 400-level courses.

Painting + Drawing Concentration Requirements

Art majors with a concentration in Painting + Drawing must complete the required courses listed below. Please note: painting and drawing studio courses must be taken in sequence from beginning (100/200-level) to intermediate (300-level) to advanced (400-level). That is, you must complete ART 290 to enroll in ART 390, and complete ART 390 before enrolling in ART 290.

Introductory Art: 20 Credits

Painting + Drawing 300-Level: 15 Credits

Painting + Drawing 400-Level: 20 credits

Note: ART 494 needs to be taken twice in subsequent quarters.

ART HISTORY: 15 credits

Note:We recommend students complete a 200-level art history writing course in their first year as an art major. Many Art History courses also satisfy other UW GE Requirements.
