Honors in Art History
Art History majors who wish to forge close ties with faculty mentors, distinguish themselves in the field, and advance knowledge in an area of interest can earn the distinction of Honors in Art History.
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for the Art History Honors program, you must:
- Be an Art History senior or junior with more than 120 UW credits (at the time of your joining the program, you will need to have completed at least 35 ART H credits, including having completed at least one 400-level Art H course or currently being enrolled in an Art H 400-level course)
- Have a 3.3 cumulative GPA and a GPA of 3.5 in Art History courses
- Identify an Art History faculty member who is willing to serve as your Art History Honors thesis advisor and work with you on the revision of a research paper that you already have written or will soon write in a 400 or 500-level Art History class.
Program Requirements
Art History Honors students complete the following requirements intended to prepare them for success in their chosen academic and professional career paths:
- Maintain a 3.3 cumulative GPA, and a 3.5 GPA in Art History courses
- Successful completion of two graduate-level Art History seminars: AH 509, 511, 520, 533, 561, 577, 581, 590, 591 (10 credits total )
- Successful completion of your Art History Honors thesis, which means a revision of an Art History research paper that you have previously written in a 400 or 500-level Art History class. The revision will be done while you are enrolled in ART H 499 for 2 credits. Your Honors thesis should be of high enough quality to serve you as a writing sample for an application to graduate schools, major national and international internships, or jobs in professional fields in the arts.
Application Process
Students who meet the eligibility requirements may apply in Autumn quarter. Application information is distributed to Art History majors via email at the beginning of the quarter.
The application for the Art History Honors program is open, submit the application form by October 31, 2025, 4:30 pm PST. Note: You'll be required to log in to Google with your UW NetID.
