About Edinburgh

For anyone needing a visual, [**here is a movie** (format .mov; 16Mb)](https://www.geos.ed.ac.uk/~acurtis/assets/Panorama_NoComment_Apr06.MOV) showing the city of Edinburgh from the top of Blackford Hill. The latter is one of Edinburgh’s 7 extinct volcanos which is just 5 minutes walk from the University’s science campus, Kings Buildings, on the south side of the city of Edinburgh.

**Movie Commentary.** The movie above begins looking south to the Pentland Hills, turns through the sun in the west to zoom into 3 scenes: Edinburgh Castle and city (to the North), Arthurs Seat (another extinct volcano within the city), and The Royal Observatory + Kings Buildings (our science campus).

[Here is a movie (format .mov)](https://www.geos.ed.ac.uk/~acurtis/assets/Movie_GrantInstitue_Apr07.MOV) showing the Grant Institute of Earth Sciences on the science campus.

[Here is a picture (format .jpg)](https://www.geos.ed.ac.uk/~acurtis/assets/Photo_SeismicLab.JPG) of part of the seismic processing and interpretation lab. in the Grant Institute, with John Underhill at the controls.

[Here is a map](https://www.ed.ac.uk/maps/maps?building=grant-institute) of how to find the Grant Institute once you have got to the Kings Buildings campus in Edinburgh.

**The picure above** is Edinburgh Castle, taken from Calton Hill (yet another old volcano). Image provided by Stuck on Scotland.
