Executive Learning Program in Mining Law and Sustainability

The Allard Law Executive Learning Program in Mining Law and Sustainability provides an overview of the legal and regulatory instruments that govern sustainable practices throughout the lifecycle of a mine.
The program offers a new framework for making business decisions — one that goes beyond the “business as usual”, and considers human and Indigenous rights, climate change and anti-corruption laws and regulations that advance sustainability in the mining industry.
By the end of this program, you will have the skills to contribute to the success of current and future mining projects with an understanding of:
- today’s complex legal and regulatory instruments that directly affect business operations, both in Canada and internationally
- the participation of Indigenous peoples in the mining sector, including Indigenous governance and law
- the role of corporate social responsibility and how CSR has evolved into a discussion of business and human rights
- Canadian anti-corruption legislation and international efforts that affect mining activities
- the role of mining in Canadian and international and climate change efforts.

Program at-a-glance
- Format: 100% online and instructor supported with real-time sessions, offered in partnership with UBC Extended Learning
- Duration: One five-week course, approximately 50 hours total
- Schedule:
- Five modules over five weeks. Each module includes video lessons, readings, online discussion, case studies and recorded guest interviews.
- Live online sessions are held once a week on various weeknights (Pacific Time) and recorded for flexibility and accessibility for all students.
- Expect to spend 35-45+ hours (5-7 hours a week for modules, and 10+ hours for the case study) to complete the program.
Eligible for the StrongerBC Future Skills Grant
The StrongerBC future skills grant is open to most British Columbian residents aged 19 years or older – regardless of financial need – and covers up to $3,500 in eligible short-term skills training at public post-secondary institutions.

Instructor
Nick Smith is a Principal Lawyer at Miller Titerle Law Corporation, specializing in Indigenous business. He is of Plains Cree and European descent, and his family is from the Ermineskin Cree Nation – a Treaty 6 Nation. Nick provides economic development and governance support for First Nations and First Nations-owned organizations, and he supports First Nations with initiatives and negotiations relating to natural resource development, First Nation child and family services laws, Indigenous housing, government-to-government agreements, and the ongoing implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in BC and Canada.
Nick previously worked for a global law firm in Vancouver and holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering from the University of British Columbia and a Juris Doctor from the Peter A. Allard School of Law at UBC. Nick is active in his community as the first vice-chair of the Langara College Board of Governors and as a mentor to law students through the Canadian Bar Association (BC Branch) mentorship program and the Indigenous Bar Association.
